President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

There was a photographer on MSNBC last night who showed some horrific pictures of people who had been beaten, one with a lead pipe.

Tourists, white, have described in overseas newspaper articles, the level of violence. Although I'm virtually certain that many of the children and women who were raped were minorities, it does seem from what I'm reading that white people were more often the target of violence.

So I understand the point(s) you are making. I've asked the person who made the post I was referring to regarding police command center evacuation from the Hyatt to give me a link.

On the other hand, if you come across a link that says the Hywatt was evacuated to make room for a command center, I'd like a link to that.

I know the reporting is incredibly spotty and it's likely we won't get links for either situation and I'm not disturbed with either of the unsourced posts; there is enough else to be disturbed about :-)

All official shelters are full, we still have churches taking people and I don't know how many are in churches and individual homes. The stores are bare and gas is rare as we have so many more people here. The traffic on the roads is worse than ever. Schools will open Tuesday with no bus service. Several are registering. I think Ascension Parish has had 742 students added, don't know how many in other parishes.

excerpt from the paper:
In Baton Rouge, La., officials feared that the city would burst at the seams, as more people arrived at shelters already filled beyond capacity. City officials said more than 40,000 people were in American Red Cross or private shelters. The population of East Baton Rouge Parish could rise from 415,000 to more than 600,000, and possibly even double, officials said.

it doesn't say anything there about the breakdown in civil order.

The "Hurricane Pam" scenario did include the prospect of widespread civil disorder including gun violence.

BTW, NBC is reporting that the list of FEMA excercises planned in 2004 included 222 events, all but two involved mock terrorist attacks. The two that did involve hurricanes were drills to plan for a hurricane at the same time as a terrorist attack.

Has anyone heard that ham radio operators in the N.O. area are being jammed on the emergency frequencies? Further there are reports saying the jamming is coming from a U S Navy Ship.

Thank you. I think the Hyatt was cleared to make it a command center, but am not certain.

See #3464; it does sound like the Hyatt was cleared to make room for a command center, although the wording is strange and I'm not certain.

One sixth* of the 1.4 million did NOT own a car. That means 230,000 needed "public transportation".

And since the state called for an evacuation why was their own plan emergency evac plan (I am sure they had one, every state plans for what they foresee could be their own possible major disasters) not put into place????

Their plan had to account for all of the people that could not evac themselves by car or plane especially in a poor city like NO. This is a huge disaster for the democrats in that state when people start looking at this.

I have the same feeling as you about our Guys and Gals in Uniform. The Libs have been trashing our Military about the War and in general and look who comes to the rescue. It makes you feel hope and faith, and the Reporters are so busy covering that aspect that they do not have time to pass on negativity and unsubstantiated hurtful rumors.

"New Orlean's ads before the storm were telling people if they evacuated and left their pets behind, they would be prosecuted for animal abandonment if appropriate arrangements were not made. Talk about discouraging people from leaving"

This is one of those important documentations that needs to be added to the compiled records. It proves the lack of preparedness geared towards the N.O. impoverished and immobile when a natural disaster hit their city. A community leader(s)(the mayor and Gov.) cannot impose a double edge sword on welfare (recipients)people who couldn't possibly "afford" accomodations, make alternative arrangements, lodging for their pets (where?) while they weren't even afforded the opportunity to get on buses out of harms way when those buses(plenty of school buses) were left behind, unused in flooded parking lots.

Why, and I'm being series here. Yes, the water eventually needs to be removed but what is the rush to move it out and wreak environmental havoc on Lake P and the gulf? There are sections of NO that are completely gone. Why not turn them into a temporary retention pond and work the problem? There are many sighs of relief that the offshore oil didn't pollute the GOM. Yet we are poised to do exactly that. Maybe the answer is that the GOM can absorb a certain percentage of toxic waste and not kill off the fisheries. I don't know but I doubt it is getting serious attention because it would be considered political death to say hold on now.

We don't get Fox so I turned on CNN to watch the evacuations that Fox is showing. Instead, their headlines said 'evacuations on hold' and their story is the old one that the buses stopped going overnight. Why aren't they showing the evacuations like Fox is showing?? They're showing everything but that.
