President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

You can't just send a whole bunch of choppers there without having logistics in place...men, fuel, mechanics etc...the blatant truth is, it takes time..

I'm listening to the Army Corp of Engineers talking now on WDSU ... he is saying a contractor is about to poke holes in some levees to let the water out. Sorry, but all I can picture is Curley in the rowboat with his "water-letter-outer." I do hope they have an effective way to close the breeches they make.

Whoa, someone asking about the impact of pumping the toxic soup out into the environment. Answer is that there will be enormous environmental damage. Question -- why do the additional damage? I guess that is a Denny Hastert question, one that needs to be asked but the messenger gets shot.

Yeah, right and that makes you about the most unrealistic poster on the FR. I guess you are suggesting the "action" is staged just off stage right or something and it spurs into action once Bush arrives on the scene. You must be in the film industry.

Whatever Chuck. I allowed for the fact that this may be coincidence - maybe this massive mobilization was well underway since early this week. Does a Presidential visit hurt/slow the timeline? I certainly can't imagine how it would do anything but help, but maybe that's just my "unrealistic" side showing.

Corps of Engneers Q&A - Q: When will the water be pumped out? - A: 36 days after the pump stations are dewatered for Orleans Parish. St. Bernard's Parish will take more time and pumps.

Missed a vanilla question or two, getting the last - Q: Follow-up on when to get the pump stations on-line. A: - Estimate 7 days after we get the canals sealed off. Will need to bring in our own generators, the on-site ones likely destroyed.

Army on commenting on the evacs. Two-pronged approach; buses and aircraft. Over 35,000 evacuated so far.

Godspeed to them.

Agree. The Governette and Nagin have been effectively set aside and replaced by people who know what they are doing.

55 airplanes and 700+ buses out of LA. Emptying causeway area.

Using military aircraft out of Belle Chase NAS.

The first amphibious assault carrier is currently supporting New Orleans from the sea. The second assault carrier is due in today, IIRC - it will support the rest of the coast.

We'd have more, but Klinton destroyed our amphibious landing ship fleet. In addition, navigation close to shore is now an unknown quantity after Katrina.

Thanks for the info about the bus delay. However the evacuations are going fast and furious now, I hear, and that's really great news.

Your point is excellent and needs to be made over and over.

Unless one has ever been involved in the movement of masses of humanity it is inconceivable. Add to that the dynamics of this event, and you have logistics that can't be appreciated by the fast-food, video game mentality our nation has adopted as a way of life.

Shep has been over the top and ridiculous in some of his reporting. I know it's an emotional situation, but he's been unprofessional.

And Geraldo last night...I really don't have words to describe him.

I saw that info in an article this morning, that 700 people from the Hyatt Regency had been put ahead of those in the Dome for evacuation. Are you saying these were the Mayor's orders? They mentioned these people having luggage, as if they were vacationing.

There is no excuse for putting them ahead of the ones in the Superdome, none.

I have a question..............I just heard Phil talk about the rapes.

I wonder how many rapes (or murders, for that matter) took place in NO every night under 'normal' circumstances, and if there has been any increase at all in their numbers, or just national coverage of them.

It may be a strange question, but I've been wondering......
