President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Maybe he should check with the Monroe, Louisiana family who took in a few evacuees from Katrina. They gave them a safe place to sleep, showers, hot food, clean clothes, etc. The thanks they got...they were murdered in their sleep."

Oh my gosh. I just woke up (on the W. Coast). That is unbelievable. I still ask the question I have been asking for days, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE??

God bless our President--who understands the words of Paul so well--and God bless our military!

Amen! Great post!

And thanks for the words from Corinthians. Beautifully appropriate!

Biggest thing is that they're flying people out of the convention center.

From the briefing being carried on WWL, the Army Corps of Engineers have the 2 canals that have major breaches essentially sealed, are leaving a small opening to allow gravity to do a bit more work in emptying out the city.

The incompetent state government officials have stepped aside and the feds are clearly in charge. What a relief.

There were coast guard and other helicopters there as soon as Tuesday. That didn't change at all. And, some of it goes back to asking by the Governor. I think a timeline on her official actions would be nice to see. It all becomes so jumbled after a few days. But, to give you an example (I gave this one last night), when my friend in the 82nd was deployed to Aghanistan last year, it took them 5 days to get everything together and ready to go.

....just seems that a lot of action is happening almost immediately after he got on the ground.

Yeah, right and that makes you about the most unrealistic poster on the FR.

I guess you are suggesting the "action" is staged just off stage right or something and it spurs into action once Bush arrives on the scene. You must be in the film industry.

1. There's a lot of buses on the road to Texas. That's at least a 12 hour round trip.

2. The LSP is supposed to provide escorts for the buses. Last night, the LSP liason disappeared and wasn't seen for most of the day, and the LSP was completely confused.

It appears the corruption and incompetence extends to ALL government agencies from LA.

Have there been any further reports of oil leaks south of the city?

I saw a couple of fragmentary reports yesterday afternoon, but nothing since.

Yep, I've been wondering about the 'official' reports missing from both Venice & Grand Isle. (both have oil storage, I believe).

Couple days ago, heard once that 'officials' from Plaquemine Parish (Venice) said that the gulf had 'reclaimed' some 40 miles of land.

On a 'local' forum I saw (Tues. ??) that 3 (of 7 that stayed) had been rescued & that Grand Isle was now split in two.

Shep Smith just getting into NO now, live on FNC, he is staying at a hotel 1 hour outside NO (this is how he is able to shave). the number of trucks headed into the area is astounding he says. telephone repair, gasoline, etc.

Buses now lining up to head to the convention center, visible from the overpass where Shep is standing. every single bus will have an armed officer on it.

ok, well - watch what you want.

If I was seeing all happy rescue stories, and a reduced glimpses of the horror I would feel I'm not being informed.

I deal with people in crisis all the time, I can take it - but not when I see incompetence.

The rescue stories are wonderful and them make me proud.

I know they could've done better, and I hope today is that day where things really start picking up speed and change.

I stated yesterday that today was important for BUSH, because he's fully aware now, he's seen it himself.

I agree with what you are saying, the reporters like Geraldo are making this all abut them and are not being adults. I am glad that Geraldo is upbeat finally, but I cannot watch his craziness anymore. It is tough for the hysterical Geraldo working on air with a cool, adult Neil Cavuto because it makes him look very childish. I love enthusiasm, but Geraldo for Godsakes take a valium. I cannot believe Geraldo just talked about the Military Unit there and said "all my buddies I served with in Iraq". He is a civilian and he is making like he is in the Military. He needs to stop shouting and be an adult. The biggest problem is that he has been off since last week until last night and he is trying to smother all the air time for himself.
