President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I only know it because the administrator of Little Charity was on the phone with FOX this morning -- said her cell would go any time -- and explained how the two are mixed up all the time. They are closer to Bourbon Street but still very close to Charity.

To be charitable, perhaps he is just not up-to-date with the correct info (lack of communication abounds!!

He gave the report while he was standing at the Convention Center, with people milling all about, and noting that his men were inside maintaining order. He had to know the food and water situation.

My cable provider (diect tv) has a special news channel where I can watch all 6 news stations at once. I click between the different pictures when I see something new come on.

I saw pictures a day or 2 ago with literally hundreds of inmates on a bridge in their orange jump suits...

I later heard that all the prisnors were let free cause the cops watching them were needed elsewhere...

I'm just getting bits and pieces of the story, and lots of stuff isn't being covered heavily..

Wierd stuff like proclamations from the president himself that the convention center is being evacuated... then tonight geraldo standing there saying thousands of people are there with no food no water and no authorities of any kind .. no buses have come and the people have been there for 5 days !

I just dont get what's happening.

Is the civic center the same as the convention center? I've heard. Does Hysterical Geraldo say he's at the civic center? I've seen pics of food and water being distributed at the convention center.

I'm definitely NOT for high gas prices, but it may be the only thing that will keep people from wasting it when it is needed right now more in the south. In other words, if the price keeps some people from making their usual 6 hours both ways drive for the holiday weekend...then so be it.

Ray Kelly on MSNBC right now... also photos taken by some photographers that are astounding. Ray is comparing this to Lord of the Flies mentality among the small minority.

You saw PRISON prisoners on the freeway for two or three days....

The JAIL prisoners were set free....meaning their sentences were less than a year.

But of course, that's not where the cameras go. The cameras go to the places where the people refused to leave.

Refused? Or were too poor to leave?

I am very familiar. I lived in rural south missisippi all my life and moved to texas 5 years ago. My family survived Camille and are very storm savvy (at least on one side). That doesn't take away fromt he fact that these people are suffering and have shared their water/food with neighbors/strangers who didn't have any and now they are low. That is how people in Miss small towns are.

Cleveland's crime has increased.
Only thing is, the only tragedy we have is we elected a Dem female as mayor.
Local news is reporting the crimes the cops won't put to paper.

Central business district and Carrolton will also survive mostly intact, as well as the western portion of the 'city' also known as Jefferson Parish. Eastern and northern portions of the city will be replacing the Love Canal in the minds of many as they try to figure out what to do.

Personally, I'd suggest condemning the whole area there, put in stiff restrictions, and sell the property to developers who are willing to foot the bill. I'd doubly love it if this became the new favorite of our liberal community here in Los Angeles. 'Oh, look, see how cheap the property is there? And it is by a lovely lake...'

I remember during the 9-11 fiasco that Bush received tons of criticism from the left wing hate America first crowd.

I remember in the days before and after the Iraq invasion that Bush received lots of , Well, left wing hate America first criticism.

I remember the posts from FReepers and they were really down in the mouth about Bush and his election chances.

He survived that and will survive this.

Thinking common sense average American people will come around as soon as the emotions of the current situation subside.

The liberals always make the same mistake and that includes Michael Mooron.

Just look at the amount of time the MSM invested in Cindy Sheehan.

At first everything Sheehan said was quoted in large headlines.

After a while common sense America woke up and figured out that Cindy Sheehan was nothing more than and ignorant Moon Bat and a puppet for the far left.

When common sense America wakes this time their going to realize that Bush actually is the hero in this disaster.

Bush has once again shown guts in the face of adversity.

If Kerry had been elected he would have been waiting on poll results.

While Blanco would still not have made a decision to bring in the Federal government.

People would have died and conservatives would have been blamed once again for not being politically correct and sensitive to the current situation.

I have made this prediction before on FR and will now say this again.

Things don't look good now but wait and it will turn around again.

The Democrats can not maintain a common front on any issue affecting America.

The Democrats have to many radical hate America first groups to appease and pacify to remain united for long periods of time.

The rumors I've read say about 100 prisoners were released. Now on any given day in a city the size of New Orleans, more than 100 prisoners would be in lock up immediately following their arrest, but before they made an appearance before a judge for a preliminary hearing. And many of those who were in holding cells would not be violent felons. Governments have to provide protection for anyone in custody during mandatory evacuations, so it would be easier to release about 100 of the non violent alleged offenders in holding cells, than try to transfer them. Or something along those lines. Judgement calls were made on the fly by over worked, under prepared police officials who had lawyers breathing down their necks.

The warnings about gas this weekend are either 1) true or 2) giving station owners carte blache to gouge.

Gouged? Report it here:

http://gaswatch.energy.gov/

We're at $2.89 for regular at the cheapest places. It was $2.59 last week. 110 miles SW of Houston.
