President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

"You should not laugh or cry, but be angry that this man could believe such an idiotic idea in this day and age. You should be mad at the race-baiters like JJ and Sharpton, who shamelessly and knowingly lie to these uneducated people in order to preserve their own power and influence."

Agreed. But if he saw the bus full of British and Aussie tourists go by it may have reinforced his thinking.

Okay...I watched O'Reilly and he had on Shep and Geraldo..

They were both pretty hysterical about the situation at the locations where they were...Geraldo was at the Convention Center...(which by the way, I don't think anyone knew had people stranded until yesterday morning)...

They both acted like not a thing had been done...and also it was reported on O'Reilly about the sniping and the lawlessness...

THEN, Hannity & Colmes comes on...sort of a repeat of Shep..but then they have on some high ranking officers of the Navy and NG (I think)...and THEY say everything is pretty copacetic...

NOW, who do we believe?

Also, O'REilly was incensed that some staff at Charity Hospital hadn't been rescued...only to find out by the end of the show..that the reason he hadn't heard from them is because they HAD been rescued.

I have never really felt as "wary" of news reporting as I am beginning to get on this story...I just don't know what is true sometimes..

yeah I don't get that... why wont they let people walk out!

First, I'm not sure that's true, although I have read stories that assert being denied passage by authorities.

The rationale is control of the situation. What happens if 10,000 people, some of them angry, start roaming as a "mob?" How do you provide relief if you don't have some control over location points?

Can't say as I blame them since they have their own problems. Last thing they need is people from Orleans Parish.

When times get tough the tough get going.

It looks like to me that the MSM enables have finally accomplished the true emasculation of American men.

Well at least the MSM has emasculated themselves.

You don't have to be so smart/sarcastic,,,perfectly clear english,,,,,people are dying-people want to help. What they need is gas, I was just trying to figure out how to get it there, knowing it was probably impossible the whole time,,,check my previous statement about it,,,

as far as help is on the way, the people in Mississip were told by local gas officials that in things would be better next tuesday,,,some of them do not have that long,,,heat index is 102,,,,without water some of them will die. Forgive me for trying think of a way to help. I know you are probably an expert in the subject, but please bear in mind i don't share your expertise,,,I could care less about the legality of it, the price of the gas or the fact that the southeast has a gas shortage. As you are aware that very shortage is what has started this conversation. I just want to help with gas,,,a guy from pensacola FL sent gas to biloxi today in 55 gallon drums to help,,,,so it can't be that far fetched that people desperately want to get gas to those people and are doing whatever it takes.

bonfire said: Yep. And now we will throw more $$ and energy at them so they can keep up the "hoodlum" lifestyle.

Pardon me, but I never thought I'd see FReeper's making such hurtful and degrading comments about these victims. They have lost the little that they had. Not everyone in NOLA is a "hoodlum". It is sad to me that this is all you guys can think about when there are probably 10,000 people dead and little innocent babies with no diapers or formula and diabetics with no insulin who may be dying as you type.

Compassionate people will take these "hoodlums" in and help them start over. And lets be clear about this...we don't know who the 'snipers' are and they are the few. I'm 'sorry' that some of them will survive and you may have to "throw more $$ and energy at them", but that is what we do in America. If you really hate the idea so much, perhaps you should consider moving to another country which suits your tastes - and I mean that sincerely.

I don't think GW cares about polls but the politics are spiriling out of control. The GOP will run for cover. I am glad that he does not have to worry about reelection and can concentrate on what needs to be done but he will be standing alone pretty soon.

5 days to get the largest relief effort in our history assembled, and deployed is an amazing feat. Communications in New York were completely disrupted for 3 days when 2 buildings fell. You are expecting a response that our present technology cannot provide. There are 92,000 square miles of devastation that you appear to be forgetting about. If anyone has a reason to gripe it is the 2 million people outside of New Orleans that are taking a backseat because of the race politics going on in NO.

Excellent post.

The Chinese call it the iron rice bowl. Building a system of guaranteed lifetime tenure in state enterprises. The Dept. of the Bowl. I have no doubt Sen. Landrieu would try to build support for her brother, Lt. Gov of LA. Landrieu, to fill the cabinet position.

Is there a specific way/ways to designate your donation for MS/AL? Where might they be?

Thanks!

Was the Police Chief or someone else saying there was no food or water at the Convention Center still?

The Police Chief, who was physically AT the Convention Center, said there was no food no water and 30,000 people there, in a live report this evening with Geraldo, on O'Reilly's tabloid "Factor" program.

That's interesting. I am beginning to think less and less of some of these people from Orleans Parish. Looks like Jefferson Parish already has some of them and have their hands full.

" people going in the Astrodome were dumping their weapons in the bushes before they were searched. Were they planning to pick them up and use them again? "

If I had no choice but go in, I would hide my weapons, with hope of retrieving them if I needed them. Duh.

Sanje Gupta says they haven't. There is Charity Hospital and Little Charity Hospital and people keep getting the two confused. Little Charity still had 1100 patients this morning.
