President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Regarding Blanko's letter to the Prez requesting the quick return home of the 256th BCT and their services in the hurricane recovery:

I hope the Prez just lets these guys and gals in the 256 come home (hopefully they have a home to come home to, although chances are some may not) and be with their families, who they have been away from for about a year and a half. I know someone here in MN who is with the 256.

"Another point: for three days, no one complained about the inadequacy of the Federal response. Then the New York Times published an editorial that said the President lacked leadership abilities. And now everyone in the MSM is ranting about the inadequacy of the Federal response."

Eugene McCarthy once described the press like this: "The press are like birds sitting on a wire. They sit and sit and sit, and then - when one flies away - all the others follow."

Ladies, I am going to pour a second martini. That ranting black woman on Fox (with her hair in curlers) sent me over the edge.

I swear, if someone from the MSM showed up on my porch tomorrow morning, they would be in danger of their lives.

Are ya watching Gretta's show now??

Thank You Gretta for the uplifting stories about the refugees and not the doom and gloom stories like others in the media

They just interviews one women that is staying at a shelter ... she said that when they were in NO they didn't know if anyone cared about them and now she knows there are a whole lot of good people that care about them and how grateful she is for all this help

Everyone's looking at their Governor alot closer today.

I really do.

Actually Shep set his SELF up for this...HE is the main one I can remember that came on TV on Monday night and Tues. morning reporting that the hurricane...

"wasn't that bad". In fact, I think I sensed sort of "let down" in his voice...like he was expecting "the big one" and didn't get it.

I think he is really re-evaluating how he felt earlier in the week. This was a "lark" for him in the beginning...a chance to go to Bourbon Street and experience a Cat 5 hurricane...

On Fox now: Laura Ingle is an embedded reporter with the National Guard, they have just landed in New Orleans.

This is great news! Now we can get the real story of the good work our military is doing, without the histrionics (hopefully!)

Correct. Shep wasn't answering BOR's question about who was to blame. he was just trying to convey what he was seeing, as he has for days now. Harrigan didn't blame anybody... he was just reporting what he saw. I sensed that they were just frustrated by what they were witnessing. For the sake of all those lives I wish more people felt that way.

FWIW Minor rant....

I will not stop contributing to Salvation Army, to the ASPCA, and to our local church
I will not hesitate to offer more when called upon
I will not stop praying for victims
I will revisit New Orleans and Biloxi when the citizens, businesses, and industries rebuild it
And I have never been to Pascagoula, but I like the sound of the name so that's on my list, too

but

I have finally hit the wall with mainstream media
I have turned off TV for the week, the weekend, and maybe next week
Although CBS, ABC, NBC are distant memories
CNN, MSBC are no longer on my remote's short cuts
And now Fox is on my increasingly shorter list
I will use my radio scanner, the web, a shortwave, and my FRiends
I will make a conscientious [OK, half-*ss effort] to only post 'news' on this thread

/minor rant off

PS, IMO, Howlin, you're right on with:
