President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Did she? Well then, I'm glad she didn't want to get anyone all riled up for no reason.

Basic rule of journalism: Report the story don't become the story!

Once a reporter becomes the story, then it is time to have them pulled. They are no longer useful to getting out the truth.

War reporters have seen all kinds of deaths over the years and kept on reporting factually. It is some of today's journalist who are wimpy IMHO. Report the story with facts or get out of the way. All some people on here talk about is how Shep (with no beard) has been there for five days on the ramp -- story has become about Shep and morphed into a story that started before the hurricane even hit since they cannot count.

And he also agreed that those people were being ignored.

For several days now I've been so shocked at how those people outside those buildings were ignored, and it's not like they are invisible. They are on EVERY NEWS station, with the News Anchors among them.

Hello,

Of course, you are welcome to join me. (This is a rare night, as my son is at a game with a friend and his parents). I am sorry to hear that you have had to deal with this not only this national mess, but other personal issues as well, wish I could make it better.

Hey, Frank's on and I might actually not have a stroke about all that occurred the last week (meaning we were all watching this way before it hit). So, pull up a chair and we'll get through this together.

Glad to be here, glad you are, too, MOgirl

No, it looks like he used it to shave his face.

To: Protect the Bill of Rights

I heard Steve Harrigan give an interview on Fox where he seemed to be supportive of the war and Pres. Bush. Maybe that was earlier in the conflict than what you heard.
The only time I heard him angry (other than the last few days) was when O'Reilly told him the poor people of the world had brought it on themselves, etc...he was irate at that, having seen so much.

OMG! She wants people to send cash to the LA Governor's trust? Is she insane? What the hell is she doing? Trying to cover up the theft of funds?

mabelkitty, you've skipped ahead a few chapters in the playbook, the graft in the Katrina relief funds isn't supposed to be exposed until the politicians need it for the election season.

I think most people on this thread are balanced. there are some problems in NO and people are discussing them. but this blanket Bush bashing, combined with the race card, is totally unjustified.

Sgt. 1st Class Ron Dixon recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan with the Oklahoma National Guard’s 1345th Transportation Company. He said the biggest difference he sees is that the people in Afghanistan wanted to help themselves, while many of the evacuees just want others to help them

I was in NYC on 9-11; I remember the generosity of all Americans during that time....

One thing that hit most was the first Saturday night after the attack, I remember being with friends at a bar, having a beer, seeing the flags on the backs of trucks as they passed by, trying to escape from the horrible reality....I was in a daze.

I remember heading towards the mens room; and posted on the door was a full page ad from the local paper...It was from Oklahoma City, it read we remember how you came to our aid, now it is our turn to come to yours...we are all New Yorkers now.....I will never forget that moment and what it meant to me...

Tonight, and for all nights to come, we are all Southerners...I will not forget, we will be their for you...

My deepest sympathies and prayers for all the victims of Katrina...donate what ever you can...America always takes care of its own...

Make sure he brings his "delegation" to help too.

I know, one reason I got a laugh out of it, but on the other hand, at least SHE knows the name of POTUS... can't say the same for most of the Californians Jay Leno asks in man-on-the-street.

Tubbs is no longer in a guaranteed Dem district.
Blackwell running for Governor may turn her out in '06 if she isn't careful.
She's a political animal first.
She was high up on Kerry's campaign.

I didn't say that I knew all the logistics. All I was saying was that had they ASKED for drivers they probably would have gotten them. It is a moot point anyway since it wasn't done.
