President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Excellent points. The worst of them don't want to "report" they want to tell us lesser mortals the "meaning" of what happened/is happening. It's especially irresponsible when they try to do it by "emoting." If they can't conrol their emotions when confronted with distressing reality, they shouldn't be on-the- scene reporters.

72 hours was the ideal time frame. The New Orleans officials didn't make a definite decision until time was running out. They didn't give the people 72 hours to evacuate!!

Oh baloney. Look I have never seen officials and weather experts so damn scared in my life and I have lived in the gulf coast for many years. There is ABSOLUTLY no argument to be made that people did not have timely and forceful warnings.

They need to tell more of those stories. I am sure there are many.

I know here in Southwestern Louisiana, several folks have already found jobs and are getting on with their lives. Also, on the AM station out of Beaumont, TX they were all excited about getting several blue chip football players for their local teams.

indeed, Blanco is the #1 cause of this.

Reading between the lines as to why the delay in relief entering the city, etc., I wonder who had authority on the checkpoints, and so forth.

I wonder if her ego and desire to control things kept help from entering; or if she knew the thugs were in charge and just wanted that to burn out before letting the help enter. I wonder if we'll ever know.

Does anybody know if the DUmmies over at DU have anything to say about the mayors "school bus vs. Greyhound" remark?

I sure don't know. Can't bring myself to look in there these days.

If bush is getting the blame for NO then i hope to heck that he gets the credit for what good job miss and ala have done dealing with this...

How can he get credit? The dad-blamed media isn't paying attention to Mississippi & Alabama...no chance of starting wars or ruining the President's credibility in those places.

That kid was Moses! He drove people to the promised land (the Astrodome). Notice too that he didn't just take black people or white people -- he rescued ALL kinds of people! If a few more had his initiative, New Orleans would be a lot better off!!

From the way he spoke, he seems like he might be an inner city poor person with not much education or perhaps didn't pay attention in school. He saved lives instead of picking up an gun and shooting at the rescuers.I hope they tell his story more often.

I wish more people would have thought of this solution. I didn't catch where he went to get the bus. It might have been a different place than the picture of all the flooded buses.

On another note, very angry woman just saying GWB won't get her vote. I guess she doesn't know he won't be running next time.

Those complaining that Geraldo is a drama king should think if they have children, how would the feel if their baby was exposed to who knows what.

It's worse than that. Anybody who has been to Louisiana in August knows that the hunidity and heat is awful. People showed up there soaking wet and are in the same clothes. No diapers, water, food for the majority of the time they have been there, outside in the elements with naked babies and old people in wheelchairs, many with injuries. We don't have to pay attention to the "hysterical" reporters. For God's sake... we can see them ourselves. In any event, I don't see how anyone can be around that and "exaggerate."

I was wondering about the security geraldo had there. Maybe they need to be securing other areas instead of protecting him..Just my opinion...

He is a professional. He is paid the big bucks to do this in a professional manner.

The ones who have done the best job IMHO, are the ones who have been there & done that....Steve Harrigan comes to mind, Rick Leventhal. Both were embedded in Iraq. I have to add Orlando to the A list because right now, he is my favorite. See my tag line.

I am wondering if this is the first time Shep has been as close to this type story as he is now. It is one thing to report death and destruction after the event. But it is baptism by fire if he has not been this close before and has lived with the stench of death for 5 days.

The biggest clue is when he told Sean "This is all the perspective you need." His tone of voice had that something which signaled he may very well be close to losing control.

But once again, he is a professional and paid to be a professional. If the time has come to pull him before he cracks, FOX needs to pull him. They are doing him no favors letting him stay if this is the case.

As for Geraldo, he has been there done that so many times I have lost count. He gets emotional (it must be in the contract, LOL! " Geraldo emotes 3x a week"), but I have never seen him this intense. It may be because he has an infant at home. Personalization. But if Geraldo needs to decompress, he should be pulled.

Like I said, I tried putting tin-foil on to see if I could put that past them, and I couldn't. The timing of the presstitute/DemonRAT 180, and the fact that it happened, isn't coincidence.

Not going to happen according to Joe Scarborough who in all of his infinite wisdom thinks the response by Mississippi has been "miserable".

What a grandstanding Sandra Dee.

The Superdome had power, and when it went out, the generator kicked on.
I'm reporting from the thread.
You'll have to go back and read it.
I can't remember all this, as I have been here since last Saturday night.
I actually have family in Gulfport, so I make it a point to jump on when these threads start.
And yes, they are safe.
They even went back (through backroads).
Two houses are okay, one is damaged, they got gas out of their garage and headed back out of town.
