President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

I don't think Geraldo will incite a riot. He knows the emotional makeup of the people around him. He is actually defusing the situation by blowing off steam for them. He is giving them hope. God bless him. (flame suit in tact)

"This all ultimately lies at the feet of the federal government who told us things were going to be better after 9/11".

No mention of submerged buses, no mention of no master evacuation plan under local control, no mention of all transportation inlets being destroyed, no mention of all power grids being out.

They were following this with a hit piece on they knew it was coming of course to follow to a "Bush held back the levy fixing funding..of course not saying that the piece that broke was more recently built"..what a load of hooey.

Fred Barnes said it best on Hugh Hewitt tonight "journalism...this is not".

I wouldn't blame him for getting his family out of there. If I had the access I would have probably done the same.

BUT he should have gone back. He has no business up in Baton Rouge. He DOES have a city that he is the supposed-alledged leader of.

No need to reply -

"[Shep,s] only a human being."

Implication: Human beings are compassionate

Fact: Shep is not giving water to those who need it and instead, saves it for himself. [Hannity show, yesterday]

Ergo, Shep is not a human being.

QED

Sounds good. For me, anything cold, wet...and with a proof of at least 30.

Oh, waiter! :)

"people like Jackson and Sharpton will argue that these people should simply be given public assistance: housing, welfare, food stamps"

People going to the Red Cross office here are also sent to the Human Resources office where they can be issued food stamps.

You are assuming Shep had enough to go around. You have no idea what conditions they are working and sleeping in. You are not there.

They were told to go there.

Uh... no... the convention center was never set up as a shelter site. People just started showing up there.

Good Lord! How much easier is it to load a school bus, 65 humans at a time, than to load a Sea Hawk, eight (if that) people at a time?

I don't think you'd quite get 65 per trip (more like 48), but with a couple hundred buses, that's in the neighborhood of 10,000 you could've pulled out of New Orleans.

If we are going to rue anything, it will the fact that a Louisiana Gumbo restaurant is going to be opened next door to every BBQ joint in the state.

I am saying more could have been done to warn the people of New Orleans.

Like what? When? I was in Miami last Saturday -- the city was totally caught off-guard by the last-minute change in course of Katrina to the Southwest. MIAMI!! If Miami, veteran of Andrew and home to the National Hurricane Center can be caught off-guard by the unpredictable nature of huurricanes, any city can.

Plain fact is nobody knew what would happen. However, mandatory evac was ordered by the Mayor. Go back and read his statement. What else was he supposed to say?

the goal here is to end, or seriously damage the Bush Presidency.

there will be weeks of disaster/blame Bush coverage, then investigations and recriminations....then the media will move onto 2006 elections, more Iraq blame, and more FLOODGATE...

after that it's looking forward to 2008 Presidential.

it won't work entirely, but the left and the MSM have finally found something they can hammer Bush with repeatedly..

Wrong implication.
Shep's only a human being.
He has emotions. He has stress. He is not a robot and perfect in any way.

Sheps not giving water to folks who need it, because he needs it.

You are lacking in compassion for insisting that he
a) Make himself dehydrated
b) Open himself up to being killed by a mob.

But think of this, where would he have taken them. Look at the chaos now. There is no way that in that short of time that this mayor could have come up with a plan to house them right before the hurricane.
