Dennis Prager has just suggested that folks open up their homes to Katrina victims. Invite them to stay there for a month. The Astromdome is not the place to house people. The state is not the proper entity to take care of these victims. The citizens should do it. Dennis himself is going to open up his home to a family.
Dennis is a great person.
Ok, for whom? Harry Connick Jr and his supermodel wife?
The response to that would be similar to the one I heard quite frequently when I worked in construction: "Who do I look like to you? Kunta Kinte?"
Thanks, sink. Good advice. Dennis himself has recommended that people who take others in set an absolute limit of one month.
He has said that he is doing just that.
And in NY, no contract of any kind matters much anyway - one of the reasons why rent is so high in non-rent-controlled properties in NYC is because it is quite easy to go two years without paying rent before you are evicted.
As long as the tenant does not care about their credit rating they can force a landlord to house them for two years or more if the landlord is foolish enough to sign a lease with them.
No, it's called personal responsibility.
You must therefore mean that every evacuee is a rapist, murderer and / or thief. Surely you do not mean that?
If you could find a way to discern who the criminals are and who the regular folks are, would you still change sides on the street and leave the people to languish?
The only way to discern is to investigate.
Do you care enough to investigate?
No way! I value my life and property too damn much! I don't even want the lowlifes of NO in my complex. Military bases and tent cities will do then just fine until jobs can be found for them.
I was thinking the same thing.
I hear ya. My hubby said the same thing. If we invite someone into our home, they will have squatters rights. I've read enough threads here on that situtation.
One of the libs that works with my daughter was asking everyone she spoke to how many rooms they had and how many refugees they would be willing to take in (we are in Ohio!) One girl said that she would not be taking any in because she had a new baby. The lib said if she had the extra room, she had no excuse and should take someone in! The new mom then asked the lib how many refugees she was going to take in, and the lib said, horrified, "Why, I'M NOT TAKING ANYONE INTO MY HOUSE!" Can you believe the audacity??? TYPICAL LIB!!
Jobs? Ya're kidding right? The way things currently are, I expect a big giant class action lawsuit and them probably being awarded the state of California.
More encouragingly, I called Catholic Charities in their D.C. national office and a very grateful person took my name and info, the type of people I could house (family w/ small children) and such and said they were putting together lists to match housing donors with refugees. The contact number was :
Catholic Charities, USA
703-549-1390
Often times, conservatives are painted with a broad brush as "not caring" about other people. I truly believe that my conservative principles are rooted in the belief that government cannot, in the long run, provide a better life for people than they can provide for themselves (e.g. welfare leads to a cycle of dependency that leaves recipients worse off - I believe I have the best interest of these people at heart).
That said, although I may hate government, I do not hate society. The vast majority of these people are not "lowlifes". They are decent American citizens and they are God's children. You could cite personal responsibility, and it would have been better if they evacuated, but for one reason or another they didn't. And here we are - what now?
If you want to argue, as do I, that government can't solve all our problems, you have to realize that in times of emergency we are called as individuals to step up and help others. This is what it means to live in a society. We are now presented with a situation that calls for us to do what we can to help our fellow man, and I am heartened to see the number of people who are doing just that.
It is an individual choice what to do, and to make a decision that security concerns are too great to open one's home to refugees is understandable, but to tell your neighbors, your countrymen, your fellow human beings at this time of dire emergency that "I don't even want the lowlifes of NO in my complex. Military bases and tent cities will do then just fine" is inexcusable.
I don't think you speak for most conservatives, and I would throw my lot in with the liberals if you did.
I care enough about my family to not take a chance.
I have an empty bedroom (with private bathroom and closet) to share with a female white Christian Katrina victim. NO children, no pets, no alcohol, no drugs, no violence!
I am willing to share my apartment with a needy woman who has lost her home and posessions in the hurricane, and I will do as much as possible to help re-build her life from this devestating disaster !!!
Your post was the most edifying -- and wise -- I have read on FR in a very long time. I pray God links you with exactly the person He has already chosen.
