Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless
NY Post ^ | 9/2/2005 | Heidi Singer

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

I read that last night, and went to sleep crying, as a mother, thinking of the devastation that little boy has seen, only to have his dog taken away.

Some on this thread throw out the predictable "It's just an animal. Save the people!!"

That's all fine and dandy, but the story about Snowball is not about a dog. It is about a little boy.

So screw all of you who think saving these animals is about putting people second. Saving the life of a pet, and reuniting them with their owners, is about people. You think after having lost everything they have known it would not mean the world to these people to get their pets back?

You're free to believe it's ludicrous. You're simply wrong about it being criminal.

But why are you wasting time here on it?

Dittos too,
Even though there are those that seem to believe that if you care for animals you're liberal.

Geez louise.

Nobody is talking about not saving people here. That is really not at all the issue.

I guess we have to agree that we disagree on this subject.

Thank you.

Some people on this thread are not thinking straight. This is not a case of animals vs. humans.

Your argument, that people who want to help animals should be FORCED to help only humans, could be applied to just about anything. For example, all sales of luxury items in this country could be halted, and people could be FORCED to send money that would otherwise be spent as they see fit to New Orleans.

But you do have to criticize the efforts of others in public?

Yes. When those efforts constitute criminal behavior, in my opinion, then I will criticize it.

Do you want to debate my right to criticize or do you want to debate whether rescuing animals over humans is the right thing to do?

I hate to ask, but does anyone know what is being done with the confiscated pets?

This is a free country. We don't conscript people, to force them to expend their energy and resources on things that OTHER people think they should do. How about we conscript you, and force you to go work at an animal shelter in Louisiana?

anyone expending resources on rescuing animals when people are in danger should be prosecuted.

Shut yer pie hole, Nazi. People in this country are free to spend their money however they wish.

There is NO SHORTAGE of help for humans -- the problem is getting to help TO the victims.

I disagree. There is a shortage of help.

There are a disturbing number of people who post here who seem to equate a love for pets and animals with liberalism.

The two are in way connected.

Read this book: "Bad Blood: Crisis in the American Red Cross by Judith Reitman"

Its the reason why I no longer contribute to the American Red Cross.

Please answer this question: How is having volunteer, privately funded, highly trained animal rescuers going to HURT the effort to rescue humans?

There is NOTHING wrong with having these people. There is something wrong with using them to save animals before all the people are rescued.

Besides, your argument about equipment is hollow. If you can rescue an uncooperative dog or horse, you can rescue a person that cooperates.

I agree with you here.

I like animals and pets too.

But you should try to touch a few guns. They are really interesting and useful for a lot of things like shooting targets, criminals and national enemies.

Tell you what, jack, I'm going to go ahead and donate $50 to one of these organizations.

Why don't you try paying me a visit and make a citizen's arrest for murder?

My faith has been restored in the members of this forum. At first the only immediate responses were from those who lacked the intelligence to understand that this post's only intention was to highlight other agency's efforts ( in this tragedy and never once saying or indicating that saving human lives should be abandoned to save the animals. Thanks to all those "intelligent" people in this forum.

Why don't you take it over to DU because you sound just like them when faced with an opposing argument!

You have no argument other than prosecution for private citizens who donate their time and money however they want!

NOW SHUT UP!!!!!!!!

But why are you wasting time here on it?

Because I feel that as a country we have become so decadent that in the middle of the largest human crisis to hit our shores, we are placing the needs of animals over people.
