WASHINGTON — The United States has an oil reserve at least three times that of Saudi Arabia locked in oil-shale deposits beneath federal land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, according to a study released yesterday.

That's right. It's a lot easier to squeeze oil from sand that it is from rock.

"I know folks who can detail the faults of representative democracy in exquisitely painful detail."

Is this why I get a ping?
Yes I'm one of those folks...
I would agree with protagoras

" I'm not sure it would pass WITH majority support of Americans.
"

The majority of American's (who give a darn, which is really about 25% of Americans) would be persuaded by whichever demogogue packaged the best propoganda - THAT'S the reality of democracy.
You can be nearly certain that, all else being equal, the oil industry would pay for the slickest ads and most well-known spokesmen for their cause - THAT'S the reality of a capitalist democracy.
What's best for the country isn't even in the equation.

Dear kjvail,

"Is this why I get a ping?"

Yes, friend, because you are someone quite adept at carrying the argument against representative democracy, and it appears that Protagoras may either not realize the logical conclusions of his thoughts, or conversely, may wish to embrace your cause.

How've you been doing?

Nice try. Trying to turn the tables from the actual socialistic agenda you advocate into me not supporting a true democratic republic is a childish but often used tactic. Thankfully almost no one would buy that particular BS.

Having driven S. Wyoming numerous times, IMO anything they do will enhance the environment. What a Gd-forsaken place!

Dear Protagoras,

"Nice try."

Thanks!

"Trying to turn the tables..."

Not trying to turn any tables. It's interesting you took it that way. However, you seem to have problems with our republic as it currently stands, and I invited someone to the conversation with an unusual perspective on that.

What you perhaps view as a cynical ploy was actually a good-faith effort to broaden the conversation. Although I don't quite agree with kjvail, I appreciate his perspective, and his critique of liberal democracy. I wish he'd stuck around in the thread to discuss it.

"actual socialistic agenda you advocate..."

* chuckle *. Well, you have a little more expansive definition of "socialistic" than I do. I merely asked whether we should use a tax policy that was used by the Founders.

"Thankfully almost no one would buy that particular BS."

LOL. Sounds like you're hoping. Keep crossing your fingers. ;-)

God is good to me.

I get bored butting heads with the Jacobins on this board and its depressing to see the the state to which the formerly conservative party has fallen, so I don't read much here.

You'll find me on Apologia or Polemics. Although the Polemics board has just restarted so there isn't much too it yet.

Dear kjvail,

"God is good to me."

Me, too!

"I get bored butting heads with the Jacobins on this board and its depressing to see the the state to which the formerly conservative party has fallen, so I don't read much here"

Well, remember that "conservative" means different things in different places.

"You'll find me on Apologia or Polemics. Although the Polemics board has just restarted so there isn't much too it yet."

Sounds like fun. Would they be nice to a devout Catholic whose political leanings are both perhaps a little conventional, and not so tightly-held?

Apologia is a traditionalist Catholic board - lots of SSPX'ers. Polemics is a paleo-conservative blog with forum.

"Well, remember that "conservative" means different things in different places. "

Yes, well when it starts to mean blind support for the national security state, plebscite democracy and a Pax Americana in the world.
I go a different path.

Some of the tests for the in-situ process involved setting off a kiloton range nuclear device underground to create the in-situ retort. There was a considerable amount of fission fraction contamination in the product.

Thanks, I stand corrected on that test. Use of a kiloton range device was proposed at one point however to perform in-situ retorting.

Dear kjvail,

Well, I'd probably be thrown out of Apologia, then. LOL.

Probably Polemics, too.

I'm not an SSPXer or a paleo-conservative.

"Yes, well when it starts to mean blind support for the national security state, plebscite democracy and a Pax Americana in the world. I go a different path."

I understand. I don't feel comfortable with certain inherent parts of those things, either.

Good to see ya, anyway.
