I agree with you whole heartedly.

NO ONE HAD TO DIE! When a Cat*5 Hurricane is aimed straight at you for nearly three days what does a person do?

The President says EVACUATE!.......ignore him

The Govenor says EVACUATE....... ignore her

The Mayor finally says evacuate....... ignore him

the media repeats evacuate, evacuate, evac....ad nauseum..... IGNORE them.

The mayor should have made busses available and called the Govenor to assist. The people could have walked out to higher ground to schools, churches and shelters. Certainly, outside NO they have buildings designated and mapped as shelters away from the coast.

Those who refused to go and later regretted their mistake could have gone to the Dome. Was there not room for 50,000 more people? Why were the parking lots full around the dome prior to the Hurricane, if no one had a way out?

Why did all the poor , non-English speaking immigrants have the where withal to get their families out? Hundreds of Hispanic and Vietnamese immigrants were showing up in Texas on Saturday and Sunday appealing to area churches and temples for shelter. All prior to the storm.

The time to evacuate is PRIOR, not after a hurricane! Earthquake & Tornado victims, have very little time or warning to get out. Those who live in Hurricane zones are fortuante to have multiple hours of advanced warning. It really makes you wonder how individuals can be so taken care of by government that they lose their own basic human instincts of survival.

"Chertoff press conference...

DHS has taken over control of operations for relief using some new law - first time law has been used - something like "Incidence of National Significance"

Excellent! The unreported underlying story here is that the State of Louisiana is incapable of handling disaster relief.

What is frustrating me is that tens of thousands of easily accessible people have been ignored for 3-4 days. A few semi's on the good road from Baton Rouge could have solved that problem. It wasn't done. Someone dropped the ball.

Your understanding of emergency response measures is based on some pretty erroneous assumptions. These tens of thousands of people are not "easily accessible" by any means. And flippantly suggesting that a few tractor-trailers from Baton Rouge could have solved that problem is abvsolutely wrong.

Popdonelly--I don't disagree with you. At all. The city and state governments were the first line of defense. They both failed miserably.

Responsibility now falls to the feds, and like it or not, Bush will personally be held accountable for their performance. It isn't fair, but it comes with the territory of being President.

For some reason, some people think that is the fault of the President. Ridiculous, isn't it?

Yes, Jennyjenny, sadly it is. I can't believe how some are piling on Bush on FR. I guess the media and some on the left are influencing them. They are underestimating him again and they are letting the liberals get away with this hostile blame game.

It was The National Black Caucus yapping about race and lack of response to the people in NO

Then they threw in a few Bible quotes and Bush bashing for good measure

I am in NO MOOD for this BS

You really do have a problem with selective comprehension. I said it is not the President's only, main or even most important responsibility (responding to libs, that is). But it IS the most visible, because cameras are always on him.

You want an example? Look at the response to his press conference an hour ago, even on this site. There are folks automatically jumping on the "he looked terrible, he's a disaster" bandwagon. All the President said (paraphrasing here) was that he is looking forward to getting down there, rolling his sleeves up, and getting to work. Nothing at all wrong with that! But it was national TV, and very, very visible.

This doesn't mean the President isn't DOing, or that he won't do more. So much of what he will do will not be immediately visible, if it ever is; things like arranging funding, issuing orders, etc., that noone sees but that are responsible for accomplishing so much. But the cameras are on him always, and he always has detractors, and he should be able to anticipate questions, and be able to respond.

I honestly don't know where you are finding fault here.

I meant to put ALL in the TO line....I wasn't speaking to just you. I am upset at these people who think this is Bush's fault and comparing him to Rudi. Rudi should be compared to the mayor of NO or the Govenor of LA...not BUSH!
I hope that all comes out in the near future at the incompetence of LA.

One of the most appalling things I've heard so far today, was the mayor of New Orleans having an hysterical tantrum, cursing and using "man" at the beginning and end of every sentence, because nobody is helping. Somewhere in his rant he stated that they have taken control away from him, and it is no wonder why.

Nagin is an embarrassment. It was his decision to wait until Sunday to declare a mandatory evacuation that likely cost many thousands of lives by leaving people who might have gotten out with no options.

If he doesn't resign after this has settled down, he should be fired by the City Council.

Here it is:

http://www.dhs.gov/dhspublic/display?content=4773

Excerpt:

The Department of Homeland Security has declared this an Incident of National Significance, the first ever use of this designation under the new National Response Plan. The National Response Plan, which was stood up earlier this year, gives the Department of Homeland Security the lead responsibility to coordinate federal response and recovery efforts. The plan is designed to bring together all federal resources to increase our ability to quickly get relief to those who need it most.

No, I belong to a very small, very conservative church (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod), which happens to be blessed with some people who really CAN sing, and I stand out like a sore thumb.

It was interesting hearing the Congressional Black Causous demanding that water bottlers and food distributers need to get in on the act to get food and water to the survivors and refugees. Wal Mart is doing exactly that. If PRODUCERS try to do it, they'll be blamed for taking too long.

The National Black Caucus is officially making this a race issue. We all knew this was coming.

The race baiters are so predictable.

The federal bureaucracy tends to be sluggish and incompetent when facing situations that require rapid responses. It would have acted the same way in any city, unless the local leadership puts a rocket in the federal agency's tail.

FEMA reminds me of a cruise ship making a U-turn in the Biscayne Bay of Miami; the cruise ship is usually surrounding by multiple vessels turning very quickly, but the cruise ship moves at a snail's pace.

Let the Black Caucus blame the incompetent white Democrat Governor that they helped put in office. It's time the Black Caucus took responsibility for their own actions.
