He's right about the lack of coordination and action. He's part of the problem though. He should be screaming at the governor, yelling at DC on camera, and taking charge instead of complaining.

People are dying. The time for paperwork and crap like that is not now. He sees the problem clearly, but he's not attacking it properly.

You are not wrong, I live in a city with three rivers, we have the threat of flooding all the time. We have spent a lot of money to re-direct the water into parks and other areas. We also know where to go to get sandbags if the rivers get to high. BEFORE the situation gets out of control. We also have tornadoes and we know what to do. If you live in hurricane ally they should know what to do.

"It is painfully obvious that our country is still not prepared for a major emergency in one of our big cities....NOLA has taught us this lesson very well....at a cost that is still growing."

1: trhe fed can't come in unless requested by the governor. While the president was signing papers declaring LA a disaster and the director of FEMA was there BEFORE THE STROM EVEN HIT, the federal government responded to the limit of it's power.

2: You MUST be kidding. Sevewral cities in Florida have taken MAJOR hits which included destruction just as massive as NO's. The difference was in teh way local and state athorities responded to the disaster both before and afterward.

Despite your "blame the feds" knee jerk response, the fed is not to blame. You remind me of the guy I heard yesterday claiming Bush wasn't doing enough because he wasn't one of those down there with a chainsaw helping clean up. That isn't his job. He DID his job and continues doing it. He's not Clinton and would never overstep federal authority like Clinton did. If you want to blame the administration, blame them for that.

Speaking of Louisiana politics apparently Senator Mary Landrieus brother is also a politician, and i think it was her father or uncle who used to be the mayor of New Orleans.

What are these people? The Kennedy's of Louisiana?

Every Parish around New Orleans is out of power. They're all trying their best to recover. Only in New Orleans is there unbridled lawlessness. Hearing from the refugees though those left in the city are primarily from housing projects.

One thing that is making the situation so much worse (aside from a governor that needs to step aside) is the flooding. The flood waters are gone from MS and AL, but obviously not in LA. =(

"How come we spend money on Wonderbras, and not damns around the Gulf of Mexico?"

Did he REALLY say that?? He claims the federal government funded the Wonderbra??

Absolutely. Jeb! runs a disaster very effectively. 90% of it is being prepared while the sun is still shining.

It seems to me that these people were caught with their pants down. Very shoddy.

This is why Giuliani should be in charge of NO; he'd be out in resue boats or something. And considering how well everyone behaved themselves in NYC on 9/11 and during the blackout, I'm sure that the NYPD could have handled the situation without the National Guard.

Yes, but Rudy sure did a lot to clean up NY City prior to 9-11

I'm positive that that was a big help!!

And I had the feeling too, that this NO mayor may have had some personal drug "issues" after watching him on TV.

He sure doesn't. "Rules of engagement". Priceless!

Yes and that is something they really needed to plan for, especially that, they are surrounded by water, what did they think was going to happen? You have to work with the situation you have. Where I am we can't have a hurricane so we don't plan for that, but we plan for everything else, including floods.

From the reports I'm hearing, at least one police station is under fire. Police are firing back.

Many police have turned in their badges..
what a disgrace that people have become this lawless.

Boy, you fell for it bigtime. Sad. A FReeper!!! I feel like crying. Think I will.

People are dying on the streets. Take the blinders off. The people need help and they are not getting it. All many have gotten are promises that 'it is coming.'

This is a massive disaster. People are stranded in many areas without access to any food or water. People are dying from lack of medicines. Anarchy is breaking out due to criminal elements and frustrations, and there is a complete breakdown of authority.

Do you realize that possibly some 2 million, that is 2,000,000, people may be displaced and homeless and thousands of those without even the daily necessities?

You go live on an overpass for 5 days without food and water --- then you let me know if you maintain the same perspective. I'm betting your perspective would be different.

You get awakened some day and find every thing you own, except the clothes on your back, is gone. And you are stranded without phone, food or water or a way to get out of your location. And you hope someone comes to help. Day 1. Day 2. Day 3. Day 4. Day 5.......

Nagin is the current mayor of New Orleans.

And according to Harry Connick, Jr. on TODAY Show, the mayor moved his headquarters to Baton Rouge days ago, he's not even in New Orleans, according to Connick.

Who can't blame them? They didn't sign on to be shot at by the people they've been ordered to save.

NOT ONCE did I hear the mayor ordering the public to knock it off and restore order or order would be forcibly restored by someone else. Not once.

I think he's on drugs. He's definitely on something or has had a cocktail or two. Not bad slurring but it is slow at times and you can tell that he is either very, very sleep-deprived, on drugs, or a bit tipsy. I would hope it is sleep-deprived but his language is so curse-ridden that my guess is alcohol.

My wife turned the TV on this morning, and I was listening to a replay of this interview. I honestly thought the radio host was talking to some drunken refugee still stuck in New Orleans.

Unbelievable incompetence!

I'd like to know how he's been all over the city. You think they would divert from Rescue to fly him around? Kind of curious.

I don't think he ought to hold his breath waiting for the Pres to give him authority over all the resources.

My daughter is living in what was once East Germany. She said news shows there blame Bush for hurricanes. Her German friend told her people don't believe it, but they enjoy hearing it anyway just because they hate Bush so much.
