Hurricane Katrina Images

The imagery posted on this site is of the Gulf coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama after Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

This imagery was acquired by the NOAA Remote Sensing Division to support NOAA national security and emergency response requirements. In addition, it will be used for ongoing research efforts for testing and developing standards for airborne digital imagery.

It is amazing what is out there. That you can see the damage of this storm, so quickly after the event, wow.

You can over lay them to get an even keener eye into the destruction.

It is just groovy.

the images are all screwy, some are out of order and some are upside down and I cant find one of the I-10 leading into orleans parish. But here is a pic of one of the leeve breaks. The dry side is jefferson Parish...the flooded is orleans

Hmm.. There are several images of the Plaquemines Parish coast that are supposed to be over land according to the map that show nothing but water..

Are these images taken by an orbiting satellite? I assume yes. Thanks.

Note from my beloved:

We used www.maps.google.com to help orient us to the terrain so we could zero in on FMC's families' addresses to check out damage in their areas. At least the satellite shot doesn't look too bad for them.

Some of the pics from the website load with a 90 degree tilt, so North is pointing East or West. You can use a picture editor to turn it the right way & then drill down.

Did you scroll over the entire image? They are not rotated correctly. In the one I looked at, the land was on the right.

Would be nice to see pics of the I-10 leading into New Orleans. Im assuming the I-10 at Howard must be underwater

Aha! I found some bits of land in the images I was wanting to see. You're right. The orientation is all screwy.
