Katrina Live Thread, Part XIII

28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Prayer for the Day

"Virtues are formed by prayer.
Prayer preserves temperance.
Prayer suppresses anger.
Prayer prevents emotions of pride and envy.
Prayer draws into the soul the Holy Spirit, and raises man to Heaven."

-- St Ephraem

Wish I could reach that far :)) I have my computer/desk set up in the kitchen. The TV is in the living room. I even moved the furniture so I could at least see the TV while I'm on FR. Is that sick, or what? And, I kind of like where I moved the chair, so it's going to stay there. Positives in everything :))

This convoy is amazing: tractor-trailers, firetrucks from as far away as L.A., suburbans pulling boats & amphibious vehicles, BUSES, truck after truck after truck. Said it's been going on for 15 minutes and there's no end in sight. Said it was part of a federally coordinated effort... also sounds like some private groups joined in? Don't know.

You won't get any argument from me. To my mind anyone who depends on government, any branch, to save their butts is out of their minds.

This is sickening that the Black Caucus would criticize the President and start quoting the Bible.

This is absolutely sickening, blaming President Bush on national TV for all of the misery! Nothing like "working together" in a time of extreme crisis... :-(

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard that - I think it's going to another for me to just settle in with a good book & a bottomless glass of wine.

Glad to hear....some good news for a change.....we should see major improvements over the next 24 hours....

The LA Government should have abdicated control to the Feds within the first 24 hours....a lot of people will have died because they didn't...IMHO

Good Lord.

I asked the mod to take the post down thinking I had revealed something I should not have. Then later posts made me realize this was a private security op. I was afraid I had said something about and illegal op and was worried.

But I now think I just heard about a private sec thing, probably dozens going on, I did hear the head of the Monteleon hired a firm to get people out and his busses were commandeered.

< I don't think we've seen very much of the mayor. What you suggest may have already been done. >

Oh, but we have heard from him. That's what I'm talking about. His filthy rants don't help anything.

I agree with your post 100%. If ever I'm in a situation that needs the government's help, I will claw myself out. By myself. And be better off for it.

Yeah... I still believe Bush has been on this all along. He sent the right military guy down there. But, then, Bush has this FEMA guy and other incompetents to deal with. Then there is the Louisiana governor and the rest of the state creatures. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Bush finally bypassed everyone and is dealing strictly with the military on this.

The CBC happens to show their faces to criticize things just when the big convoys start appearing.

Masters of timing, they are not.
