28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Not to be picky but won't the Comfort arrive too late to be of help?
People will be gone from NO by 9/10.
"Hurricane Katrina was STILL in the state of Mississippi at 1.m. Wednesday morning, just moving into Tennessee!
Now, were they suppose to fly/drive into a hurricane to help the people who refused to leave?"
Hey, I think you should get a prize for that! Great point!
Does anyone know what the heck happened on the overshoot on the # that could be taken?
Some elderly man was taken off a bus in bad condition. Then there was a death in the Dome. I don't know if it's the same guy. But I gather the buses aren't air conditioned. Those poor folks...the heat and stench must be enough to cripple most of us.
.........
The heat, the stench, THE INCONVENIENCE is why we will not see any of the well dressed and clean shaven tv liberal spin meisters anywhere near the south!
Ted Koppel is a national disgrace after I witnessed him ridicule the FEMA director. Poor Ted, still living in Alice and Wonderland where all one has to do is WAVE A MAGIC WAND and all will be right again. Koppel is another out of touch liberal shouting from his ivory tower. The Koppels of America (ignorantly) assume that one human being like our FEMA director can swoop into New Orleans and all the other surrounding cities and towns as if he were SUPERMAN, scoop up 100,000 people into his bulging biceps and carry all of them to safety. Don't forget to throw in the assortment of cats, dogs and 3 forgotten dolphins in some unknown hotel swimming pool.
HEY TED KOPPEL, until I personally see YOU make a physical effort to lend a helping hand in a Katrina relief convoy, STFU! YOU and your ilk are a crippling trickle effect on America. It's so easy to sit in your nice new $500.00 dollar suit, clean shaven and point your manicured finger at those who are ACTUALLY MAKING A "PHYSICAL" EFFORT to come to the aid of the hurricane displaced, not to mention this country is still recovering from other natural disasters in other states with little sleep to go on. Sleep tight Ted, ya jerk.
A couple of hundred opportunistic rats are an emberassment to the thousands of folks rescuing their neighbors, and standing patiently in line waiting for some assistance. Of course the opportunistic rats do make a sensational news story so you really goto go with the rats at the top of the hour.
Again,
Why is it so logistically hard to load up some C-130's with water and food, and parachute it in by the Super Dome? They can get the supplies from Walmart, Publix, Kroger etc... Just clear a little area where the choppers land. I use to see it in the military we would drop vehicles, artillery. Why can't we do food?
Perhaps we are just looking at the efficiency of Government, and it does not matter how much taxes you pay. Oh one more point I am sure the terrorist are taking notes...
The Fire Marshall happened.
This always happens in Texas. They come in and lay down the law.
Yeah annex Louisiana into Texas. Half of the Population is headed there anyway.
Any where with a water supply I'd say! Get em out and spread em out.
Never been tried before and one thing to use numbers, another to see bodies.
well, Hawaii wants to bail out of the US also, so it can be the 48 star flag
You forgot his $200 haircut.
Nice rant, though. I couldn't agree more with you about the obnoxious Koppel.
I saw it stated earlier that San Antonio and Dallas were taking people too.
what did the FEMA director say?
our side had better start getting tough in their responses to this, the DNC fax machine has been in overdrive tonight, all the MSM media pinheads (and a few of the cable ones too) are plugged into the script.
Just dawned on me. If the people die in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma they can keep from counting them as hurricane victims... especially if the coronor lists the death as heart attack, etc.
San Antonio's open, but there's an element of "winging it" to this whole op.
Is there really much corruption in the Mafia? I thought they ran a pretty tight ship. It's a criminal enterprise, to be sure, but I would expect that its members are by and large faithful to those they're supposed to serve.
Don't forget the TP and the plastic bags...
