28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Tropical Storm 12
I'll tell you what... let's compromise. Fill it in with dirt to give it some positive z. Then lay out the road network to mimic the old city. Then rebuild.
Shep has been criticized for being too emotional today, but my goodness, for all that he has witnessed these last few days, it would take a toll on even the strongest among us.
Way too soon to tell but right now it is on about the same track as Isabel of 2003.
That's incredible. Need some of what he smokes...
"He cut Shep off every sentence"
Exactly right. I wanted to hear what Shep had to say, not Bill O'Reilly. Seems like Bill was intentionally NOT wanting some of Shep's thoughts to go out on national TV about the real conditions there.
Bill O also cut off the Dr. who was being interviewed. Again the same thing--like Bill didn't want the truth of what the Dr. was saying to be on TV.
Guess his producers told him to cut people off? Or is it just Bill?
Phil and Edna Maniglia, Antoinette Peres
My family has not heard from them yet. Please pass this along and let me know if you find something. Thank you.
Prior emails from this doctor said this wasn't the first attempt at transfering either.
The prisons sent buses to transport them previously; but there was no way to get them from the prison to the buses.
Prolly a troll
CNN: Astrodome is full. Buses being sent to "another city". No word on where inbound buses are being sent.
Therefore, don't lecture me!
One death reported inside AD.
Sorry to disillusion you.
Once Chuckie got up on the floor we knew it was coming though.
Thanks for the good news. The majority of people in this country are not without respect for the law.
So much emphasis is being placed on what's going on at the SD.
There are other people with needs on the Gulf Coast. I'm glad they're being reported on also.
Shep is no doubt a liberal--he lets his bias show now and then. But he's done a yeoman's job of reporting--and I respect the heck out of him for doing that. Aaron Brown, on the otherhand, is just way too smug for me to handle--except when Greta and H&C and BOR are on Fox.
I'm not sure I could ever recover from standing on a bridge with a corpse like he did today.
Too emotional?? How could you NOT be??
Other than his 'dodged a bullet again' faux pas (forgiveable, considering where he was and how it looked at the time), he's done a great job reporting, IMO.
That is a wonderful story.
The treatment of POWs was related to their own personal feelings of honor within their society and the disrespect and humiliation it would bring to their own families if they didn't die fighting.
You can place value judgements regarding suicide based upon Christian values but they really wouldn't care less.
What's the problem with prostitution? Who died and left you in charge of sexual relations?
Not that I agree with any of the above statements but I'm allowed to point them out.
CNN: Buses that transported people didn't have air conditioning, windows didn't open. Someone died either on the bus or in the Dome in Texas.
bus them 50 miles away and land them at a big McDonalds. Go back and get some more. Bring them 60 miles away and land them at a large movie complex. Go back get some more, and bring them to a different place, a shopping mall. go back and get some more. JUST GET THEM OUT OF THERE.
Then do your planning.
Look, I've already explained to you that you don't have any idea what you are talking about. We lost 71 good Marines in Fallujah. A majority of those men died in the period after the first five days of operations. And the difference between a "base of operations" in Thailand and the massive relief effort you see underway in New Orleans doesn't really bear any comparison. Although you are clearly an expert in incompetence, I'm not sure your personal inadequacies equip you to make sweeping judgments regarding the current effort in NO.
