28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

" aaron brown just took twisted the presidents words for a political point...
he said "How does the president view all this destruction and chaos in these peoples lives?
video of refugees crying, then cue the Pres. saying " a temporary disruption...etc."
Damn. I saw that ,too.
Complete and blatant distortion of President Bush's words by Brown.
Anyone who has any doubt about media " integrity " should view that clip.
Thanks. Keep that handy.
As FYI here is an email report of an expedition by my brother-in-law Dan who lives in Lafayette:
I called about 9:30, was surprised and relieved to hear that Danny was home. He was eating, but did get to talk to him for a minute. He said that when
he got to the rendevous point early this morning, there were 500 boats and most of the guys had a buddy - 1000 men ready to go help. He drove to New Orleans and launched his boat from I-10, and was working the area of Canal Street to the north, by City Park, the causeway. He made 50 trips, shuttling families to safety. The Coast Guard member who was with him turned out to be Matthew Brannon's boss! This man had lost his house, as did a paramedic that Dan helped. He had been working for four days straight.
Dan said that there was lots of activity and help and that the teamwork was amazing - the helicopters, the boats, the families who were grateful for rescue. I expressed concern for the children and Dan said that he was telling one little black boy that he (the little boy) would have quite a story to tell his grandchildren. He said the children seemed resillient and ready for adventure. I am sure that reality will hit, but I am thankful that the children are OK for now - at least the ones Danny was helping. He said that sometimes his boat went over cars. He could feel them hitting below and it took a bit to figure out what was navigable. He said that their church in Lafayette had commited to housing 100 people in the church - a commitment made to the Red Cross.
That's amazing about the people of Kobe. Aren't the Japanese mostly Shintoist and Buddhist? Maybe their religion has something to do with the way they handle crises. They are a very disciplined people.
Those people were great. Took personal responsibility for not evacuating and now are being as self sufficient as possible.
I'm in my fifties can remember in my youth of not having to lock my bike for fear of having it stolen. Looking at a Sears Catalog where you could order guns {no questions asked). Like to continue but Al Sharpen is being interviewed on MSNBC,

Been advised that all personal on ground at Cabrini have been picked up.
Looks like a USMC helo picked them up.
Some of the older military bases have successfully been turned into nice communities for poor. Saw a program a while back that showed how they gave a base to some people who wanted to turn it into a home for orphans with elderly allowed to live in some of the housing free in return for acting as grandparents to these children... turns out it was a huge success and most of the kids went from failing to honor students and went on to college and the elderly gained, too, by having a purpose in life in helping teach these kids.
LOL!! Guess that is the difference -- I sweat very little when working outside. When I have sweat on my face, my kids know it is really hot. Our humidity is usually pretty low around here which also makes a difference.
Six shirts -- that's a lot!
I was just getting ready to turn in.... now you've done it.
I wish it were not so--but everything I've seen from the MSM points to this. The only counter-balance to the "blame Bush" movement will be those pictures of looters and reports of gangs shooting at rescue choppers and boats. But am afraid reports of that will be--like coverage of 9/11--"erased" as much as possible from news coverage in the weeks to come.
And Hastert's comments have only served to make the administration look more callous than concerned. Sheesh!
Well I'll say this. Southerners from San Antonio to Alabama are doing to most to aid in the relief efforts. I am disgusted with my state's (the wealthiest, California) lack of effort. We got money for every illegal that comes across the border, but we offer nothing to fellow citizens in the US. I am ashamed we're sitting here debating gay marriage when we should be sending national guard, rescue teams and money.
Sooooo predictable is the left.
All you engineers and costruction people out there...........
What is the answer to this "rebuild NO" stuff.
When a home is flooded half-way up the ceiling, is the damage to the drywall, studs, insulation, etc. fatal? Can a home stay flooded that high and be salvageable or would it be too costly to repair?
If it is a total loss, how in gawds name can they rebuild some entire neighborhoods on taxpayers' back? If so, I can see a $300 billion to $1 trillion repair job.
Did you hear Chuck Schumer tonight on the Senate floor where he stated in days and weeks they will turn to blaming Bush in a full scale assault? he didn't state it in those words, but everyone knew what he meant.
Sorry, we've been down this route. They did this 9-11 and they will be even more blatantly political now. They aren't going to restrain from attacks for the sake of saving lives. Wish they had the conscience to do so, but they don't.
All the folks at Cabrini HS have been picked up by CG helo !
New Orleans Saints' Jamal Brown bows his head during a moment of silence for victims of Hurricane Katrina prior to the preseason game with the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, in Oakland, Calif.
at the astrodome - benefit the evacuees. 'shirley jackson lee is spearheading a clothing drive'.
'we should all offer to have the refugees live with us'.
will you appeal for an end to violence?
we have to look at the fact that the govt was late. saw institutional neglect of new orleans
they deliberately did it to make it sound harsh..
even I thought "Gee W, don't tell folks their suffering is a nothing more than a "temperorary disruption."
Then I remembered the words were from the part in his speech when he was trying to calm people about gas supplies and prices and they had edited that out
juxtaposed with the video, and edited without the preceeding context made it look like Bush was mocking the dehydrated kids...
