28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.
Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."
Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.
The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

Tropical Storm 12
i will be getting dark soon...I sure hope they can do rescue missions tonight. I heard the nights have been lit up with flashlights hailing for help.
I've been cubicle bound for most of the crisis. How has the MSM been portraying Blanco?
The problem is that NO and Louisiana itself is home to some of the most corrupt political figures in this country. Hell, look at Huey Long as one example.
those Guard forces are under orders of Blanco. let her order the looters shot. she's not, because the fax from the DNC told her to hold out so Bush is forced to do it.
Sanity! Thank you Speaker Hastert! |
AM I dreaming? Or did CNN just put up a graphic titled "Race Reality"?
Sounds like they can no longer hide or play nice with what the african-American community is putting itself through..
This all is just unbelievable
This is not what america is about ...
I live in Austin. They are going to send some of the NO refugees here. I'm going to see what I can do to help them.
heartbreaking photos.
It's time for the TROOPS.
I don't care where they come from, or how many are needed.
Get them in there, secure the area, and get those poor suffering people out of there to safety.
Sort out the legal niceties later.
The American people will understand.
I know what you're talking about. There have been some way off remarks made. I bet they wouldn't be talkin trash if they had actually rode out a storm or lost everything they own.
sounds like he has been screwed by the gov and miss mary.
Home at last.
Campus in afternoon lockdown but everything looked deserted to me when I left,,I guess they all were locked down.
Report from local on Slidell. Area below I10 is flooded but only 2 deaths. Trying to get back up and some areas just have downed trees. It is more hopeful than initially thought.
For a long timme today no helicopters from NO but now they are back up. People dying in the field house. Very sick people. There are many more in No at hotels etc than I was aware of. Everyone here is overloaded with relatives. Secretary has 22 relatives in her three bed room.
Girl across the street has something like over 20 and her grandmother who was evaced from NO died on the day of the storm, took them a day to get the body out. Mortuary says to cremate, they have stacks of bodies. Not a good time to die here
Out of chaos almost always comes dictatorship and/or vigilanteeism.
It may really start to spiral.
There is no local leadership in this situation. We need true leaders who love the people, love the American people, the innocent people, and love their country. NOW!
I pray this does not spread psychologically to other distressed, inner city ghetto communities in other major US metropolitan areas, with a lot of time on their hands and plenty of victimized, opressed 'beefs', legitimate or not, on their minds, and they now know that if enough of them 'rise up' in unison, they can overpower local law enforcement, and it will be Walmart Heaven with no security guards or beeping sensors at the exits.
I don't agree with everything he says in that post, and it is yet to be seen how close to the mark that rant is, but it is very, very good food for thought.
Great news, but you're killing dialup users
You'll know soon enough - btw - what ever happened with that wacky story about the hijacked bus last night?
Blancbrain, very clever Karl.

Jesse Jackson
Dear Sir:
Respectfully, I submit that you should shut the hell up. Looting and lawlessness IS the problem. The National Guard choppers are BEING SHOT AT. The NOPD are BEING SHOT AT. You want to focus on the levee? So do they, but check this out: THEY CAN'T UNTIL THE MOB STOPS ATTACKING THE RESCUE OPERATION.
I know you're looking at this situation with concern for the racial implications of the deterioration of civilization out here, but this is bigger than whether people are going to be racists after this is over. This is about rescuing the masses i.e. life and death.
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and blame your stupid comments on your lack of knowledge of the situation. Don't prove me a fool for doing so.
Regards,
Michael Barnett

poor old grandma, with that American flag around her
Yeah, well, he better not say that TOO loud...we are trying to tell our state politicians that we can't afford to pay for all of the illegal immigrants and their health care, and care...
They might get the idea that Delay means them also!!!
