Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

the Cubans stopped the advance of the marauders....good ol Cubans

Of course, the media and talk radio at the time BLAMED the Cubans for the blacks rioting, claiming that they had "displaced the poor blacks" and "created tension in the city."

Cuban Americans and Christian Anglo males are the only two groups in this country it is OK to bash.

I'm sure I have missed this in all of the thousands of threads, but I get this impending doom that Al Quaida is just rubbing their hands in glee watching all of this chaos. They are probably watching our every step, confirming their theories that our rescue operations are totally overwhelmed. Their thinking now has to be, "let's strike 10 or fifteen cities and send them into chaos". If that were to happen, I think we would definitely be considering abandoning our efforts in Iraq.

I remember driving through New Orleans at night on I-10. After you pass downtown and the Superdome heading east, you run into this huge area of abandoned buildings off to the right of the highway. It was a massive area with nothing but rows of streetlights and no other lights anywhere. I've never seen so many abandoned buildings all together in one area, not even in the south side of Chicago. That city has been abandoned by a lot of people over the years.

I saw the usual tourist sights, including the French Quarter and I have to say I was totally underwhelmed by the whole place. I have no intrest in ever going there again, although the northern part of Louisiana was much more appealing to me. A friend of mine who worked in NO told me about the "blue light rapists" who operated in NO back in the 90's (and perhaps are still there). They put blue strobes on top of their cars and stopped cars carrying unsuspecting women to rape them. My friend said it got so bad at one point that the police told everyone not to stop anywhere for police cars, but follow real police cars to a police station. It seems there's been a certain level of chaos and anarachy in New Orleans for decades.

To: Fitzcarraldo says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon." Why would tourists still be there? 5 posted on 09/01/2005 5:51:52 PM EDT by MarkeyD (Cindy - The new 'C' word! I really, really loathe liberals.)

there was supposedly 10 busses hired to come there and take them out of the city, but the Feds commandeered the busses and they never went to the Convention Center. The tourists had paid $45 each to ride too. They were stranded by our govt. for the sake of political correctness in my opinion.

Well I can tell you.

The black rowdies from Opa Locka and Lib City and whatnot north of the Miami River were moving South and the Cubans strapped down and met them at that bridge by Jackson Memorial and the rioters-looters turned tail.

and that was over a jury verdict too and 10 years or so before Rodney King or OJ

From http://mgno.com. (Please don't visit, their bandwidth is very stressed.)

New Orleans Police Department Status: The situation for the NOPD is critical. This is firsthand information I have from an NOPD officer we're giving shelter to. Their command and control infrastructure is shot. They have limited to no communication whatsoever. He didn't even know the city was under martial law until we told him! His precinct (5th Precinct) is under water! UNDER WATER -- every vehicle under water. They had to commander moving trucks like Ryder and UHaul to get around. The coroner's office is shut down so bodies are being covered in leaves at best or left where they lie at worst.

They don't even know their own rules of engagement. He says the force is impotent right now. They have no idea what's going on, no coordination...

More from the Police Officer. I'm typing as fast as i can while he talks to us: He's only hearing bits and pieces. The people in the city are shooting at the police. They're upset that they're not getting help quickly enough. The fireman keep calling because they're under fire. He doesn't understand why the people are shooting at the rescuers. Here it is 5 days ago the Mayor said get out of town and nobody went and now they're pissed.

The National Guard was at the Hilton, but now the Hilton is evacuated. When they said the CBD was gonna get 6 feet of water, it seems like everyone evacuated.

He turned the corner onto Canal Street and it looked like a flea market. People breaking into every store, going to the neutral gound (median) and trading and selling everything.

They broke into Winn Dixie Monday Night. Do they steal food? No. Cigarettes and liquor. Store was a mess. All the meats were going to waste so the districts went over there to salvage food for officers. Many cops have been eating MREs.

The Iberville Housing Projects got pissed off because the police started to "shop" after they kicked out looters. Then they started shooting at cops. When the cops left, the looters looted everything. There's probably not a grocery left in this city.

Over 30 officers have quit over the last 3 days. Out of 160 officers in his district maybe 55 or 60 are working. He hasn't seen several since Sunday. HQ is closed, evacuated. No phones to contact them.

"HQ, be advised, we're going 10 7." [going off duty]

"Ok, y'all coming back on???"

"We don't know."

Scary how the liberal media is burying the fact that there is a hostage situation in the convention center. God knows what they are doing to the female tourists they are holding.

Buried in the NY Times:

The police superintendent, Eddie Compass, estimated that perhaps 100 armed people were inside the convention center and that he was considering a plan to restore order there with a force of perhaps 500 police officers and national guardsmen.

Mr. Compass said that some stranded tourists who had sought shelter at the convention center instead found trouble. "The tourists are walking around there and as soon as these individuals see them, they're being preyed upon," he said.

What it really is...is Blackhawk Down, Dawn of The Dead, Independance Day and The Road Warrior, all rolled into one movie.

I live on the border of the Bronx, NY. Its almost like there are certain areas where everyone has just given up on certain segments of the society. I have my own reasons why I think this is, but we have truly reaped what we have sown with liberal social policy.

Scary to me that conservatives on this very forum are making excuses and demanding that everyone act PC and shut up about unpleasantries we are witnessing right before our eyes.

This is the predominately black urban thug culture that many celebrate...unleashed on the innocent of all races stuck down there.

It has been coddled for far too long....and it has spread sadly.

we yet only know the tip of the iceberg of the depravity

we have no reason to scorn Liberia or Sierra Leone....we are proving we can act like animals with the best of them.

Another point is that many of these are not exactly the cream of the crop of New Orleans' residents. They contain a very high percentage of the dregs. Ordinarily, there'd be enough decent folks to keep them in line. Now most of the decent folks among them are the old, and weak.
Most of the decent folks left before the storm. Hmmm,,,could this be a picture of post rapture America in microcosm?

This is starting to look like the end of New Orleans as a major tourist destination. When the stories of tourists being raped, robbed, and beaten up by the local thugs are published in a few days, not many people will want to go there. Biloxi should bounce back in a year or so and when it's rebuilt bigger and better than before, Biloxi will pull tourists away from New Orleans.

The horror of what the tourists are now enduring as hostages of the armed thugs in the convention center will make Saddam's sons look like choirboys when the news becomes widely reported.

"...FAST (?) team has arrived at Carville..."

That's way upstream from New Orleans - just below Baton Rouge.
