1,400 additional National Guardsmen to reach NO within 24 hours.
Twelve USCG ships enroute to NO; 7 bouy tenders, 5 armed cutters. Briefing notes that CG officers and petty officers are also law enforcement officers and will serve as such.
Eight USN ships enroute, including salvage ship (USS Grapple), helo assault carrier, landing dock ships.
No direct mention of lotting and shootings by thugs in NO.
Breaking...
"Besides the Possi Commotatus legalities"
I wish some of the Pubbie talking heads and even the Prez and his staff would explain this to the American people. I don't think the average Joe 6-pack understands that the military can support clean-up, etc., but they can't patrol (though I did hear that they were sending in some MPs). I suspect that they're blaming the Prez for not acting, when it was up to the Gov to call out the Nat'l Guard and the mayor to handle the police - - it wasn't the Prez's job.
They are not my fellow countrymen anymore
they havent been and wont be!
This whole thing is a screw up in my opinion. I cant believe that after 4 days little has been done to save these people. Its not an island way the hell out in the middle of nowhere we are talking about . NO is on the US mainland . After 4 days most people are still stranded and starving there ?
"..but they can't patrol (though I did hear that they were sending in some MPs)."
Yes they can. They can not make an official arrest. They can only temporarily detain. Anyone they take prisoner has to be turned over to civil authorities. They can also be used as security to protect assets, up to the use of lethal force to protect those assets. When martial law is declared the regular military can be used in the defense of society in general during crisis. Which means they can shoot rioters and looters during the commission of their crimes.
Well if they had any brains down there the'd pop a few looters for the good of the rest . Word would spread fast .Im not talking someone stealing food , I'm talking the thug with the TV .Put a few down before it's way too late ( may be already )
That's what the buzz is...
"There's nothing more peaceful than a dead troublemaker."
Robert Heinlein?
We learned our lesson in the '77 blackout - didn't we...
"Im not talking someone stealing food , I'm talking the thug with the TV"
Exactly. Taking stuff for survival that's going to rot anyway should be ignored. But shoot the rest. Plus, they should interview everyone that they rescue for basic info and anyone answering "No habla englaise" would be thrown into a C-130 and dropped outside the country.
"Robert Heinlein?"
Not sure.
The whole thing is a farce. What the hell are they doing down there.as I said before , this is mainland USA not an island in the middle of no where. In 4 days most people are still stranded .come on , give me a break .With all the planes and helicopters , military and resuce country wide we still have the bulk of people stranded down there? What a royal screw up.
I've been thinking about his lately, and I some very bad suspicions about what's going on. The Governor has had over 66% of Guard reserves still stationed in Louisiana and she supposedly has only called up 2000. She not only has the Guard, but all of the state police and many of the state's local LE agencies under her domain.
From the beginning, people within her own administration have justified this looting under the need to survive. This despite the fact that this looting began immediately after the hurricane left (and some during it). While the need to survive is understandable, I don't think these people ever envisioned just how out of hand this would get. In a way, they helped perpetuate it.
So what is a governor (and mayor) to do? Do you send in your own state's Guard and LE officials to shoot your own people...especially people of color? No. This is much too hot a political issue to touch...especially if they ever plan on running again. And even according to them, this is just a minority of people running wild.
So, you think you can wait it out and hope that things better..but they don't. Instead, things get out of hand and you demand that Bush send in US troops to handle your incompetence. The longer he waits, the worse it look for him. Now, imagine how the White House may be dealing with this situation. Do they really want to violate Possi Commotatus...or worse, do they want a bunch of white US soldiers shown mowing down poor black looters after a hurricane.
Bush is in a terrible catch-22 because of this governors incompetence. Worse, no matter what he does it can only turn out bad for him, because you know damn well that US soldiers shooting poor black folks in Louisiana will not go done well in the media. Because this governor didn't have the guts to maintain order, she is not only demanding Bush fix things, she (and the Demorats) just may be laying the perfect trap to help bring Bush down. Maybe I'm paranoid, but after listening to Sharpton tonite, he seemed a litted to eager to see US troops on the front lines.
Maybe instead of sending in 5000 national guard, we could send in 5000 members of the aclu to "negotiate" and hold peace vigils with the thugs. Then when the thugs shoot knife and yes, unfortunately rape the kumbyaers the left may see evil once again for what it is.
Thank God!
Googled it, the full quote is ""I is a great believer in peaceful settlements," Jik-Jik assured him. "Ain't nobody as peaceful as a dead troublemaker."" It is from a novel titled Retief's War by Keith Laumer. Ever heard of him?

Very thoughtful. I think you may be on to something. Unfortunately, another situation in which the DIMs don't think about the American people and the country which they took an oath to preserve, they only think about outing the Pubbies and regaining power.
"...she (and the Demorats) just may be laying the perfect trap to help bring Bush down. Maybe I'm paranoid, but after listening to Sharpton tonite, he seemed a litted to eager to see US troops on the front lines."
Could be possible. But hell, even if they didn't intend to do that, doesn't mean they might not decide to turn it against him later. That's another advantage of being in lame-duck session. What are they going to do? Defeat him at the next election? That's right! He's can't run for re-election so he shouldn't care. Sometimes the right thing is not going to be the popular thing but it still just has to get done. If people get pissed off about it, it's likely they're people that didn't vote for him anyway, and don't vote for any Republican. I think he really has nothing to lose.
It's a ruse. Shoot-to-kill orders were broadcast just to lure ACLU lawyers into the battle zone.
Na... That would require a medi-vac to carry out the wounded. Just break out the 7.62X39...one shot-one kill...
I do not beleive we time to worry about agressors...
Thank you for this posting. I've heard about the Ships and God Bless ALL our people in uniform. As far as the liberals go SCR$% them. If they have to pull their triggers, my finger will be on it with them. I don't want any of them killed by drug people of any kind or gang membersor any one else while they are working at saving Americans.
