Martial Law? What will the mayor use to back it up with?

He needs an Infantry Division or two. Where would he get em?

During the height of hurricane Hugo, the Charleston Chief of Police gained notoriety for transmitting a short message to his officers regarding looters: "We don't have room left in the jails for looters, don't arrest them, just beat them."

He also took 1500 police officers OFF search and rescue and put them on looter patrol.

> Day late, and a dollar short. Typical Democrats...

Yep. My take is that the local pols, many black, were
horrified at the prospect of some white Guard troops
plinking looters (who are mostly black).

Apparently, some pol saw his own home being ransacked
on TV, and decided enough was enough.

Once emergency food, shelter and other basics are at
hand (which may not yet really be the case), there is
zero excuse for looting.

About time. The animals have tried to take control of the zoo.

I've always enjoyed N.O. My daughter and I visited in mid-March, as she interviewed for Tulane. Glad to say she's in a 7-year M.D. program, not at Tulane. Doesn't have to take the MCATs and doesn;t have to be up to her tush in polluted water.

I;m supposed to attend a 5-day pharmaceutical convention in N.O. in late Feb 2006. The hotel we;re supposed to reside, the Hyatt near the Superdome, looked like a war zone and I bet 90% of the windows are blown out. Looks like we'll be in Vegas this year. Boy, the convention business is really going to suffer.

Hope Antoine's reopens. I've been eating there for 30 years. Great baked Alaska (probably the last place on earth to get baked Alaska).

Just to add some info that was on MSNBC, the mayor said that they are pulling 1500 cops from search and rescue and putting them on the streets.

At word of this the ACLU is sending it's emergency team to the area immediately.

The mayor really couldn't do this any earlier...he didn't have enough people to enforce it. Better late than never.
They have to protect relief supplies and equipment now.

After they move the folks out of the Dome, those National Guardsmen babysitting them will be free to enforce the NO-LOOTING order.

Lack of leadership here, and I will keep saying this until the message gets through.

Blanco and the Mayor are nowhere. Where are the elected officials?

These people cannot even define leadership, much less practice it. Criminal lack of vision, planning, leadership and personal responsibility.

Well, the mayor cannot declare martial law--he does not have the authority; not to mention he commands no military forces. He also does not have the authority to suspend any part of the Constitution. Perhaps he is declaring some sort of state of emergency that provides more powers to his police or maybe he is relaying someone else's announcement.

About damn time.

Should have been done before the rain stopped. Haley Barbour got a handle on this in MS, right off the bat.
"We will deal with looters ruthlessly."
