President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Yup..what surprises me is that Denny said it now..I think the discussion should wait a few months....I suspect that much more of the levees are structurally impaired than we think..and the entire system would have to be rebuilt, and use a tripple layer system, like Holland..and that has to be done BEFORE any reconstruction can be done inside the bowl..

"I might still want to protect and feed my family."

Agreed! I just wanted to point out that WE ALL should be prepared to go a long time on our own if we can. Heck, just washing the old juice bottles and filling them with tap water with a few drops of bleach in them would be a real help in some situations - and anyone can do that.

And I pray that I'm never in the situation that these poor folks (both poor in $$ and in their tragedy) are in. Parental instincts may turn out to be stronger than my moral values.

There is no miracle solution.

Thank you for making that great point. The leftists are acting like the government is God, that it has the ability to get supplies there in no time. Hmmmm, I wonder why?

Come back to reality, you are stuck in the utopian 90's. Blacks(along with the rest of us) all over the country are watching in horror and wanting rescues and evacuations asap, outraged at the gangs for delaying those rescues. There is no sympathy for them, except from maybe a few other gangbangers.

FYI..I just saw Harry Connick on MSNBC..I thin it was a replay from earlier, saying that if he was poor, like these folks and lived in NO, by gosh, he'd probably go out and steal a plasma TV himself..

Back in a few.. I have to go throw his CDs in the trash..

Press conference Blanco and state police admonishing press to quit reporting rumors. say everything is under control, just a few shots, no riots, said the media is causing the people of new orleans to get upset when they hear things about shootings etc, that are not true....and this is what is contributing to the unrest there. Guess they have TV and radio and paper deliveries down there, but not getting food or H2O.

She's so full of crap. She should resign and let the grown ups handle this.

This is just weird. The press actually seemed quite reluctant to report the looting and violence at first, but now it is so out of control nobody can ignore it. For the Governor to say the media is exaggerating is simply spin. She doesn't want NO shown in a bad light. Hey, I don't have a lower opinion of New Orleanians because of this. I would be willing to bet the situation would be pretty similar in any major American city. Unfortunately that's what happens when human beings are put in situations like this. Anyone ever read Heart of Darkness or Lord of the Flies? I am in no way excusing this uncivilized behavior. It's appalling and must be stopped, but it really doesn't surprise me.

It is a lie of omission when they do not discuss the ineptness of the LOCAL government and the LOCAL government's lack of planning to take care of the indigent during a hurricane evacuation.
