President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Then you convene the Legislature and the Legislature does it,

Now that you mention it, where is the Louisiana legislature?

"I think you vastly overestimate our significance"

Like I said, it was an opinion. Agree with you on the bad guys listening, altho at this point, probably electronic stores have been hit too. It is hard to imagine MSM bubble heads listening to scanners, tho;)

Governor is on WWL right now. She thinks she is a toughie today. Someone has taken the time to teach her how to present herself at a press conference, but she is still making number errors.

EOC News Conference:

Governor Blanco:

Evacuation efforts at the dome continue

The dome is secure and under controller.

Hundreds of busses heading to NO.

Signed Executive Order invoking Emergency Powers to requisition school busses.

Our biggest concern is ground transportation (reall? not looting?)

Ebbert is charged with coordinating the city's terrorism response capabilities and obtaining federal and state funds for homeland security. He also will oversee the police and fire departments, the Office of Emergency Preparedness and city Emergency Medical Services, and the 911 Center or Orleans Parish Communications District.

Want to guess who appointed him?

Looks like HE has dropped the ball, doesn't it?

Having worked with law enforcement, I can tell you that they are not on the public channels relaying detailed info. That's why there is so little chatter. The most you hear is a request for help. There is no feedback afterwards because they use different channels.

I doubt the bad guys can figure out a scanner. These aren't sophisticated terrorists.

"Unless someone tells me differently, you will have to excuse me if I happen to believe what CHertoff said. It is ILLEGAL for the military to operate in a law enforcement function unless so mandated by the Governor.

This reply I'm making isn't to start some discussion, or flame war. So, respectfully...

I haven't heard Chertoff, or any other announcement. Someone else posted the FEMA directives on this thread a way back. In short Chertoff's full of it and so is Gonzales.

Here's an historical event that Chertoff seems to have missed, or is diliberately ignoring:

Johnson overruled Wallace and sent fed troops down to Alabama to uphold 18USC 24X whatever after a SCOTUS ruling against the State of Alabama. Fed troops escorted some kids into school and guarded them in the halls of that school.

If the USDOD can be used as friggin' hall monitors, then the USDOD can be used to straighten out this sit.

if it's a seperate freq, ok, but dangit, I just hate for that stuff to go out over the radio ... in the military that'd be considered classified info, even going over modern crypto equipment..

Yes, Congress is convening an emergency session. That's why I posted their phone number. They need to hear from the nation. Now President Bush is talking about gas prices. (no matter, my car was totalled - I have no car right now.)

THis been happening since 1964 when the riots in Phila happened and the Jewish Merchants were burned out of North Philly Same damn liberal excuses and the MSM ran with it Don't know why anybody is shocked about what is happening in NOLA There has been plenty of precedent set.

Excellent point. And each new crisis seems to get a little more angry and better armed. And the lefties are fueling the fire with the 'oppression' rhetoric and their freebies. The riots in LA in 92 are another example of seizing any moment for violence and anger. I remember how the left threw out excuses and money at that one.

FYI, see post #4381, from a Baton Rouge shelter.

One person went to the River Center where there was trouble and said it felt "dangerous". The people were rude, shoving, rough, argumentative. They were not surprised there was troulbe. Plus they were grabbing things sort of indiscriminately and throwing away half eaten sandwiches, etc. She said she had not seen such waste in a time of urgency.
