President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Question: Where are the looters PUTTING their ill-gotten gains?

In stolen boats? I've been wondering that, & others have asked, where are they hauling the stuff to? They've probably "squatted" in the house of some well-to-do person & set up housekeeping. The fort, complete with armed guards, who unlike the police & National Guard, have given themselves permission to "shoot-to-kill."

I'm beginning to think that President Bush should declare a state of insurrection to exist in the region and bring in the regular army on this and totally federalize the effort. FEMA can only do so much with the clueless, corrupt political apparatchik that has existed for decades in Lousiana and NO. Let Nagin and Blanco go crying to the press in the wake of such a decision: it's apparently all they are good for.

Bring a gun and reloads.

I was caught out when the LA Riots started. The most precious thing in the world to have when that happens is a gun and lots of ammo.

State capitol building is in lockdown - this I know for certain.
Now hearing that the city police has 26 units in downtown BR. Inside official line is that things are calming down.

The question of "Why do bad things happen to good people?" has been eloquently addressed in everything from the Book of Job to many of the greatest theologians of history.

It's been adressed by never answered, of course.

But people need to at least to address the question rather than pretend that evil is specifically punished on earth while people are alive, and good rewarded, which is obviously not the case.

By way of comparison, we've heard for four years now about DHS planning for a N/B/C attack. But if a nuke went off in a major US city than is already beset by transportation choke points (i.e. NYC, Seattle, SF), do you really think that the response 3 days later is going to resemble a well-oiled machine?

Nope. See Jeffe's excellent post 106 at the beginning of this thread.

And yes, the crime wave is spreading out of New Orleans

I was afraid of this. Don't be surprised if they "pick up help" & spread across the nation...unless they start getting shot.

Thank you so much; I'll go retrieve it and save it to my file. I'm sure our newspaper will report something ugly and I want to counter with facts.

The editor publishes all my letters; he's conservative although the publisher is liberal.

For anybody who is interested, I just talked to onyx and she has just spoken with Toby (gulfcoast6) and his family is fine; their house is still standing, but not habitable; they evidently went to a cinderblock church to ride out the storm.

I'm certainly glad to hear they're ok. I'm hoping the relatives I still can't get ahold of did the same.
