President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I think it is the response that was unpredicted. They seem to have NO CLUE how to organize. This is going to have to be revisited to prepare MUCH better in the future.

This possibility has been predicted for over 50 years, and still, they are fumbling.

"The scope of this is beyond anything we could have imagined."

Yes there are folks saying these people who are dying on I-10 should help themselves and walk to the SD, from what I am hearing the SD is about at the breaking point. ALso the food and Water distribution is not worked out.

We are 72 hours in now and the infirm out there going to start dying faster now. The healthy human body can only take so much, and those with medical problems are in severe danger from dehydration and exposure in that heat.

If they can't get the looters stopped and resume rescue operations the death toll is gonna soar.

This is just a frigging nightmare now.

Ever single pump failed. Every single one. Pre-strike report I read said that only one, the largest one, had an independent backup generator.

There will be congressional hearings.

FEMA has suspended operations at the most critical time for these people.

I don't blame them.

Chaos, panic, anarchy. Airdropping food and supplies might do some good. Won't restore order, tho.

CNN: FEMA suspending rescue operations due to safety concerns. Send in the NG.

As a historian mentioned on talk radio during the Big quake that destroyed FRISCO early 1900 and the fire that destroyed CHICAGO
Looters were shot

Report on CNN about the Convention Center was pretty bleak.

How much was truth and how much was ranting by the reporter?

And the pictures posted keep reminding me that, for little kids, where your mother is, that's where home is.

The situation in downtown Baton Rouge appears to have been an over-reaction, but we are not getting a lot of information.

Apparently, there was something going on in the facility where the "refugees" are being kept, and a number of police officers, perhaps the SWAT team, were called in to help. The Mayor decided to close the courthouse, which is right next door, and everyone went nuts with rumors.

Tensions are very high here; people are very nervous. No one knows if it is paranoia or not, but the rumors and fear are swirling. Even if there is no real danger, we've worked ourselves up into a dangerous panic.

Hopefully, we can all just calm down, and get ourselves back together.

This sounds like (though it may not really be) something a lot bigger than "normal" looting.

Well it's looting by individuals and wholesale looting by gangs. The gangs however, are going to be attacking rival gangs and anyone else that gets in the way of their crime spree since the police are spread so thin. Not to mention they figure it's a good time to rub-out the competition.

"There will be congressional hearings."

Yes, and the MSM will report it was BUSH"S FAULT, no matter what the hearings uncover.

The reporter on CNN said that in one part of town, the people being rescued were calm and gracious; in another part they were angry and violent. Now with the suspension of rescue efforts those poor decent people will pay for the indecency of their "neighbors".

But the liberal MSM will cover everything with "moral equivalency", blame everything on Bush, and give the criminals a total pass. It is just INFURIATING!!

There will be congressional hearings.

Let's hope they're brutally honest hearings, too. There's massive corruption involved here, as well as unbelievable incompetence, and (in the case of the looters) a fair bit of a society reaping what it has sown.

Sadly, I don't think our political leaders are capable of the sort of serious and concentrated thought that will allow them to learn the proper lessons from this.

And the anger and frustration needs to be directed where it belongs, to the power brokers in that town and state.

How about LBJ's Great Society that created this underclass of criminals

Airdropping food will result in thugs with guns trading taking control of the stockpiles and trading it for God knows what...

I really don't care how it looks to the ACLU types any more. If you're on a roof or in an attic and don't have a firearm in your hands..you're worth saving..for those causing trouble..make a bullhorn and flyover announcement that you have 2 hours to come out with your hands up, no weapon or be shot on site.

I suspect you're right. The main blame lies of course, on Mother Nature, but also on the imcompetency of the LA government. The mayor is a moron. The governor, from what I have heard from her mouth, is a moron.

It's hard to understand what is going on down there. What are the criminals thinking? Why is it so difficult to get food and water to people? Why is there seemingly no organization to these efforts?

It's such an unimaginable situation. Is it because LA is filled with incompetent leaders? Or is it because the scope of the disaster is so huge?
