President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

CNN replaying the ARGUMENT between Miles O'Brien & Haley Barbour
Fox now has Harrigan at a flooded I-10 with boats that are holding back, because the first boats that went out were shot at....
"very frustrating"
have almost 1000 volunteers there, with orders to stand down for time being.
Very true. A while back, when I was in Seattle, Chinese and Vietnamese gangs were a big (though localized) problem, and I guess they now have problems with Russian gangs.
Near a boat landing . . .
Medivac mission . . . I-10 off ramp
Fox News - they're even shooting volunteers in small boats in New Orleans; that effort has been suspended.
Remind her too that the president declared an emergency before the hurricane even hit. And he's the one who convinced the Mayor to order a mandatory evacuation.
St. Louis gets about 1/2 a million people in for the Mardi gras parades and parties. Not as wild as NO, but wild enough that I have never been downtown for one. They have been celebratig it for 25 years or so.
It is the 2nd largest Mardi Gras in the UA. Google it.
you type faster than i do...
Time to declare it a rebellion or something and send in the serious troops.
Nah, she's too busy attending to the vitally important task of giving simpering interviews on TV news. She must draw national attention to the suffering of the people of her state, instead of getting on the phone and trying to actually DO something about alleviating that suffering.
There was a classic moment on O'Reilly last night - he was interviewing the judge in Houston who was coordinating setting up the Astrodome. Basically, O'Reilly asked him how long it would take to get things set up. The judge said it was already mostly done in 48 hours. O'Reilly asked him how they were able to get it done so quickly. The judge replied that they had contingency planning just for such an event. O'Reilly was speechless for a couple of seconds - a rare positive amidst all the scenes of disaster.
That is the difference here - Texas has a LOCAL JUDGE capable of understanding the need to plan in advance, and capable of overseeing the execution of that plan - and Texas probably has hundreds of other officials just as capable. Louisiana apparently has a governor and a mayor of its largest city who did not understand that. And if they are incapable of planning in advance, they are therefore even MORE incapable of reacting after the fact.
But it'll be Bush's fault that FEMA and the military has to make up for the shortcomings of state and local officials. FEMA and the military should take over the secondary placement of refugees - not be responsible for the primary initial care and rescue. What happened in Louisiana in the way of disaster planning is criminal - but what do you expect from the most corrupt state in the country?
Apparently rival gangs began to divide turf inside the (no longer quite so) Super Dome.
It's so overwhelmingly sad, watching a city's death throes.
per fox.....
Volunteers in boats, ready to help with rescues have pulled back, after being fired upon this AM.
In New England we used to use a phrase about being Bullsh*t - we used it as a verb & i'm definitely BS now if this is true
JUST heard that...1,000 volunteers with boats on the edge of NO...ready to go in and RESCUE people..and they are getting shot at, have been told to stand down for now.
This is beyond anything.
This is not a rescue, it's a war. Our military is gonna have to take control from local Warlords before the rescue can go on. (this is from me, not from the scanner)
Your Dem sister's "epiphany" evidently lasted less than 24 hours.
Saint Michael the Archangel, patron of police, defend us in battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke them, we humbly pray. And do thou, oh prince of the Heavenly host, by the Diving power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the other evil spirits, who wander throughout the world, seeking the ruin of souls...
I don't have any patience with this.
Is martial law declared or not?
Lord, care for these officers!
This was on FNC and I was only listening while trying to get ready to go out so I don't know who got shot down - Broux (D)? Came into the study to post it but didn't actually see it - just heard it.
Broux was complaining the president needed to put someone in charge. The president did put someone in charge - Chertoff.
yeah...and "wicked bs"
