President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

>>>Have the three major broadcast networks gotten on board yet?
Now you are going to upset Rupert Murdoch. I believe that he consdiers the Fox broadcasting netowrk to be major. After all, there are more people watching Fox Broadcast Network in prime time than some of the "Big Three." Why does the Fox Broadcast network get a pass on this? They didn't show anything.
Excellent catch!
An example of the situation is buses sent in to evac sick people were commandeered to take out employees of Bell South (or possibly it was Sprint)...that was what they were showing..
You shoulda seen the city back during the police strike in the 70s...crap games on bourbon street. But that was before the crack epidemic, and things were more civil...
Waited at the bus stop more than once and witnessed purse snatchings.
Lived in a yuppie neighborhood by Bayou St. John and could hear gunfire across the bayou almost any night. One day, some teens decided they were going to play bad guy, came into the neighborhood, robbed one woman and killed a man bicyling on the way to his mil's house about half a block from where I lived.
The year I left, NO had more murders than Houston.
Perfect, thanks for capturing that. Chertoff was the name.
"To: jeffers
Per multiple sources, sea level +3', same as the lake.
So, if the city is 15' lower than the lake, then water in the city is in places 18' deep?"
The math is correct but my maps don't show many places that deep in the downtown area.
It is already becoming truth to some. My dem sister called me this morning and said "I just want to know, don't you think the federal govt has responded so late to this? What is GWB doing, doesn't he know there is a problem?"
I told her that FEMA was here Tuesday. A field hospital, evac center, heli pads and tent city were up on Wed. She didn't reply. I told her thank God for the feds.
Thx.
Especially interested in any reports of open conflict. The pot's been on a high simmer all night.
That makes two of us. Every one of us in Hurricane Alley knows the 72 hours rule.
I remember the crap games in 1988 when I was there along with the banners complaining about the people killed by the "Reagan/Bush AIDS Policies".
I hated everything about NO. It was a cesspool.
I've got a dem sister too & she's blaming President Bush also - but has no criticism for the mayor & gov - go figure
The local ABC & NBC stations here (WSB & WXIA Atlanta) have been running relief telethon crawls across the bottom of the screen, but beyond that, they, and the other stations here have stayed with regular programming.
Not to mention thousands (or tens of thousands) of square miles affected, very few roads left intact, especially in the hardest-hit areas.
Fox Interview
John Breaux: There needs to be somebody in charge, coordinating everything..
My comment -- Mr. Breaux, that person that needs to be in charge is, by LAW and CONSTITUTION, your Governor!!
(sorry -- just had to vent that, after listening to days of blaming the feds.)
Has Onyx, who lives in Mississippi, checked in yet? Any word on her?
It's a great point - we who immersed in this thing, self included, can sometimes lose perspective. (Not to excuse obvious malfeasance that has happened). But, the grownups are finally taking over here.
And I'll say it again: the US is going to have to deal honestly with the psychotic culture that has spawned and nurtured these bastards. And I mean deal honestly with it.
I don't want to make this a "race thing," because the mere fact of belonging to any particular race is not what's causing the problem. At the same time, however, honesty compels me to note a simple fact: if you want to find the worst part of any city, the best first place to look is the street named after Martin Luther King. There is a cultural sickness in those areas that needs to be dealt with.
"I am extremely angry right now."
Steve, I join you, and it is easier said than done, but don't be. That will come later when we all dissect the responsibilities.
