President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

An example of the situation is buses sent in to evac sick people were commandeered to take out employees of Bell South (or possibly it was Sprint)...that was what they were showing.."

Wise move or not, that won't ease tension.

Counts what you mean by downtown. Part of the CBD is in a hole. The Quarter is high. New Orleans East is all a hole. City Park area is high. Part of the the north city is in a hole, and part is fine. At Franklin and Broad, a lot of the houses are very very built up, and the street would be flooded, but the houses might be mostly dry.

Well, I was quite disgusted with the head of Fema yesterday, while being interviewed by an MSMBC reporter in Mississippi. The reporter asked him why they weren't there already and he said "we are in the state, but we cannot put our workers in danger". As they were talking, a Salvation Army truck rolled into the picture.

And it will keep on simmering and boiling, but see my post on that little girl. You can't forget the good souls.

I'm with you. I swear, if anybody aound here starts to get political about this, I'm going to forget that I'm trying to be a good Christian man. I'll go redneck on 'em.

The big copters, the ones that go thud-thud, are now coming over. They were coming over last night after midnight.

Are guys with .50 cal machine guns leaning out of them, perchance?

Exactly. We're talking about physically isolating a major city on all sides from relief on the ground, the skies full of rescue choppers (in coordination, I might add), and thousands to rescue. And some of those to be rescued are freaking shooting at their rescuers.

We've somehow go to squeeze in getting supplies on the ground and distibuted without the looting thugs running off with it all or destroying it for "fun".

We're getting an outstanding level of effort, and better results than I expected from the beginning.

It's taking so long because there are thousands of them spread all over, and helicopter rescue is a slow operation. And evacuation IS the priority, and has been THE priority since this started.

Understand, however nurses and Dr.s are calling the radio saying patients are dying from the heat, no power for ventilators, and medical professionals are sick and starting IV's on each other. IMO, these patients and medical people should be priority when evacuating.

I know what you mean.

I worked with a bunch of good people who were dark skinned, taught a lot of kids who were from poor neighborhoods, but wanted to get out of the pit. And then, there are those who like it.

There are equivalent groups in most every ethnic group, too. Chinese, Vietnamese, Hispanic, Irish, Italian, and whatever have produced groups like that.
