President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Good morning. I agree with your post and would hope this gets priority and yes, some people just need killin'.
Did you just hear the report on FNC about buses to be used to transport patients from a hospital being comandeered by state policy (?) and trying to put phone company employees on the bus instead?
So, if the city is 15' lower than the lake, then water in the city is in places 18' deep?
Was on the phone this morning with another hospital admin. Where is the AHA through all of this? The big lobby...they need to pull some major strings to get those hospital workers out of there.
Most of NO is at the level of the lake. Part of Metairie is draining. This means water less than knee deep on Decatur street, and 20 ft deep in some other parts.
The thugs are gang members from what I am hearing.
Gangs are in every big city in America. Ours are having a field day today.
Remember the MSM is now owned by just 5 corporate giants and they will broadcast what they think the masses can handle. They want life to continue and not have everybody hunkering down in their bunkers preparing for anarchy.
Noted : IO steveegg one eye shower.
That looks like a SWAT unit, and if they were in a hot zone, they'd be buttoned up inside, not riding on top.
From a triage standpoint that may be the proper response -- you need phones, and if the patients aren't in life-threatening condition, then it's probably more important to restore phone service into the city.
Steve,
My son's ship the USS Benfold was part of the 5th Fleet that responded to the tsunami along with the USS Lincoln - it took them 5 or 6 days to get there from Hong Kong (if I remember right)- it was the day after Christmas & some of it is a blur now
i got you beat here in orange county calif, it's anywhere between 2.77 and 3.19.
The talking heads have very little understanding of the logistical problems facing the Fed's efforts. And Chertoff/FEMA were only very recently greenlighted to take over from the inept local and state relief flailings. They couldn't even plan because there was precious little data to go on. I keep hearing, "why no massive airdrops?" while at the same time we know good and well that until sometime yesterday we hadn't mapped out places for airdrops not covered by water!
The Feds have mobilized with lightning speed, given the obstacles to progress that exist. I'm getting d@mn tired of the complaints, they aren't helping.
Homeland SEc wants inventory of all school buses in La and will commandeer them for evac.
God it is good to have the feds here. The big copters, the ones that go thud-thud, are now coming over. They were coming over last night after midnight.
Persons interviewed just said
"can't imagine the devastation"
Other legislator
"extent to which our state [MS] has been damaged by this storm"
"you can't tell everybody what is going on down there and have a one sentence solution"
"absolutely it [NOLA} should be rebuilt"
"more coordination needed"
"lot of confusion"
asked - like 9/11 with RG, don't we need leadership - in control and to communicate?
Yes I would like to see president put someone in charge of coordinating gov't and local
other said in response, we have Michael C to do that.
People are forgetting the storm started 72 hours ago,,this is all happening in 72 hours. I am amazed at what fema is doing here so far.
I was speaking specifically of the hospital personnel mentioned by Peach.
I just heard that interview and the Democrat got shot down when he complained no one was in charge at the federal level. Chertoff is in charge.
I see, thanks.
