President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
I know that...but they are enough to make it miserable for the people trying to help. They need to be shot.
I can't believe what I'm reading this morning. Unbelievable.
And this differs from, say, Liberia, exactly how?
This is not just a New Orleans thing, I'm afraid. There's a reason why the first -- FIRST! -- thought of some of these animals was to start looting. In Biloxi, the looters were out even as the storm was still blowing!
After this is all over, this nation has to do some very serious thinking about the psychotic culture that has been allowed to fester and spread in the inner cities. It has got to be stopped.
heads up folks! FNC talking head about phone oil gas spike.
Yeah well the *worst* have gotten so bad the media now evacuating for their own safety.
Gotta love these guys.
It's equivalent to "some thug" when you haven't had your second cup of coffee yet, LOL!
The suggestion to reduce the size of page on a user post has to be implemented by the person creating the thread.
For these threads, it amount to reversing the boxes where the list of links content is posted, and where the "Please keep in mind that many FReepers are located in these areas ..." comment/content is posted.
I'm curious if the 100 post setting works for you BTW.
These guy's rock. From what I can hear, they are doing an outstading job of staying calm and keeping a level head in tremendously difficult conditions.
Shoot to kill these perps. Immediately along the Gulf.
Defenders and Bulldogs deserve a commendation.
Yes.
Just keep reloading. I finally got back in. They need to list it with live365 or something that lets more people in.
They evidently stopped searching them as the crowds grew, to speed up entry into the Superdome.
You also have to believe that some of the people that didn't evacuate, didn't evacuate for a reason...they planned to loot after the the storm passed.
Phones are working?
I hear what you are saying but in an emergency , if you give up the right to defend yourself you become a potential victim. I posted a month or so ago that a shelter here said no pets, no alcohol and no guns. 2 out of 3 was enough for me not to condider it.
I'm sure you're right.
It seems the reporters are "a twitter" of being verbally anti-gun or anti-people owning guns.
Seems to me that if people were more in "polite society" (ala Heinlein) mode, the looting would be less likely because the "citizens" would not be so certain the criminal element is the armed element.
