President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

You are right!
It's Beautiful!!!
We need to have some kind of a new "WPA" set up. The government is going to be paying billions for this anyhow, and there are all of these people who are going to be unemployed. When the water recedes, give them all a number, give them shovels, brooms, and saws, and put them to work on demolition and cleanup.
I meant batteries for peoples radios...
If the relief effort doesn't find some leadership soon, the left will have a beef by default.
That those people are STILL on that overpass right now is inexcusable.
The apathy is due to the fact that during 9/11 money was sent to the Red Cross and misused.
I will not send to the Red Cross ever again. I suggest the Salvation Army. No reputation as ever abusing funds.
There is a very interesting resource mentioned on this thread - perhaps you would like to link it. One FReeper just found the house of a friend still intact, allaying some fear.
Perhaps the link would be of use to some others. Perhaps you would like to add it to your thread-starter list next time...

Complete Aerial Picture Survey of Mississippi Coast Damage
Please no "this is God's justice." There are just as many holy, honorable, honest, decent, God-fearing people suffering the same losses as there are scum of the earth in this area today.
Shame on you.
I understand that. I do. I just think that a bit of decisive and competent local leadership and some elbow grease, as opposed to hand-wringing and buck-passing, might have saved some lives.

NASA Simulation of water in NO.
I was wondering how that was going to go down with them. Trading one dome for another dome is not great advertising.
If it lives?
Grammar police here. A baby is not an "it"
He or she would work.
Just tell me where to stand and I'm there! We don't have the breath to waste on blame, we must save all our energies to get those people off those rooves and out of the water. I can't be there but I'll pray. I've been praying and typing since early Sunday morning...I've hardly slept and it's all melding together but I've never been more sure of what we're doing and we must stand strong and keep America's spirits from flagging and giving in to those who will take this very moment to try to strike her a mortal blow. This is a time to beware of false friends and their evil plans for America. The 24th of September the left will try to get a lot of press mileage Bush bashing and demonstrating against the war. They are our real enemies. The Islamists can't throw anything more devastating at us than what we've already been through...and if we can survive it and come back...we can flip them the bird. But the left in this country is refusing even to help with this disaster. As if leftists weren't caught in these floods. Just red state people. That's the most unhinged and childish philosophy and is absolutely why they must never be trusted with power. They have no judgment and no heart.
Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Keep us posted.
You've heard it? I was a disc jockey for 20 years and used to get in trouble with one of my Program Directors for playing it...:-)
I hate to say it but 9-11 and OKC pale in comparison to the size and scope of this disaster. Man has nothing on Mother Nature when it comes to metting out wholesale death, destruction, and suffering.
WWL reported earlier that they *were* airdropping supplies to I 10.
Right now the earth is likely the most peaceful it's ever been in the history of humanity. This actually has been documented in a few studies.
At the moment there isn't a full scale, country-against-country, actual war going on anywhere in the world, which is simply astonishing and virtually unheard of in world history. You have a variety of civil wars and guerilla insurgencies going on, as usual, but many of the worst ones have stopped or simmered down in the last few years.
And there really aren't any natural disasters recently that weren't routine, normal events.
