President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Yeah that would be interesting to see some of these NO Looter types try to do that in Texas.
If it happens I hope they get plenty of Video of the fracas. It would be funny to see how quick those loser looters would be down and out.
Agreed about jeffer's #106 rant. I'm not vouching for anything he's said there, but it surely gave me food for thought - and all of us need to realize we've very little information right now, and very few of us have any experience in this type of contingency planning.
Thanks. That made me smile.
The number one reason I would be packed and on the road ahead of a disaster (if I had prior warning) is my three cocker spaniels. No way would I leave one of them behind and they don't let you bring them to shelters.
Nite everyone.
We need a debate,,,do we rebuild NO or do we let it go?
I couldnt help but notice that two people rescued and interviewed in Baton Rouge, praised God and one even thanked his friend "Jesus Christ" for getting him out. These people thought, planned and prayed for their survival.
Unfortunately, some people left in NO have no sense of their own survival. They have always depended on the government for shelter and food, and depend now on the government to make "their decision" for escape without putting any thought into what they themselves need to do to find their own survivorship. I realize that some people are dazed, confused, ill or injured. But some just dont seem to have that basic instinct to survive. All the while, the looters and criminals with their negative survival instincts put others in danger of rescue efforts.
Please keep in mind what I am saying is not a blanket statement in reference to EVERYONE there, just a portion.
I guess it's just a hunch but I am usually right with this stuff. Of course I don't know him personally so can't really be sure.
Another heartbreaking shot from WDSU...
Man forced to leave his dog behind on a barely above water roof, and the sorrowful look on the dog as the boat pull away...
WDSU- People being shot for ICE!
supposedly CNN said there is another levee breach, but since the water is equalized, it will not cause more flooding.
Water *is* being airdropped.
"I understand that. I do. I just think that a bit of decisive and competent local leadership and some elbow grease, as opposed to hand-wringing and buck-passing, might have saved some lives."
Now imagine your law enforcement has NO transportation and NO communication network and you have the reality they faced and are facing.
WDSU-This is going to be BAD when the water goes down. not nearly enough resources to protect property...
Hadn't thought of that. Last October drove along 18 for a long way, expecting a drive like along the Rhine river. Of Course had to stop and climb up the river to see the river. Good way to walk out.
JMHO... let her go... save the French Quarter on it's own island since it seems to be at sea level, but everything below sea level let the sea reclaim.
Ok - now I won't sleep. They depend on us so. I can't believe they wouldn't let him bring his dog!!
Heartbreaking. Poor dog. Poor owner.
There IS another breech, saw it earlier tonight on Greta's show... about a mile from the 17th street breech. What does this tell us? The levee is waterlogged and likely to continue failing throughout.
Just saw Robert Kennedy Jr and Germany's Environmental secretary blame the hurricane on Bush for not passing some environmental bills... saying he is reaping the whirlwind now and this is what he gets.
Ignorance is bliss...
There are picture of others carrying out their pets....Wonder why he wasn't allowed to bring his.
I said good post but I still blame john kerry
