President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"This is wrong. I hope other shelters / families in the state can take these people."

Houston has several shelters set up. They're using the Astrodome only for those evacuees from the Superdome, but Houston's mayor said today that they have other accommodations for people who don't come on the buses.

"I agree with you. Shep has always seemed to be little more then eye candy for female viewers. FOX has the FOX babes for the guys. Shep is for the women. Also, let's all remember that FOX and all channels are in it for the money! Their not on the air for the defense of truth, justice and the American Way. FOX News has convinced conservatives that they are fair and balanced. Rubbish. They are in it for the dough."

Some "pastor" you are.

We have to assume that the cops in Texas are appropriately armed.

I hope the authorities in Houston make sure the "refugees" are appropriately DISarmed...:-)

Maybe the problem is that we have too many politicians running the country and not enough leaders. All the politicians think about is their next election, their polls, their blowback, the press. It is hard to have a center, a place where you can make decisions, when you are "all about me" and the next election.

CNN will be breaking in with new video at some point - but it looks like they were forced back out of the gates of dome after they got those first few interviews.

LKL is on now (recorded earlier)

Hubby works for the USACE and he is waiting for the OK call for him to head down there. The call may come at anytime but most likely after NO is vacated - he would be called for repair/rebuilding duties. No search or rescue duties. My guess is he may be sent to Mississippi or Alabama.

United States Army Corps of Engineers = USACE

I am exhausted and I need to unwind so I can get some sleep tonight. Good night all

This is what's coming to help as well.

050831-N-1467R-024 Gulf of Mexico (Aug. 31, 2005) - A Landing Craft, Utility (LCU) assigned Assault Craft Unit Two (ACU-2), departs the well deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) bound for New Orleans. The LCU is loaded with sandbags, water, a small flat bottom boat, 300 lifejackets, a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and enough supplies to last ten days as part of the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina hit the Southern Gulf Coast States. Bataan's involvement in the humanitarian assistance operations is an effort led by the Department of Defense in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Bataan has been tasked to be the Maritime Disaster Relief Coordinator for the Navy's role in the relief efforts. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate Airman Pedro A. Rodriguez (RELEASED)

I'm not sure that the mayor can legal declare martial law. I think only the governor can. I'm not splitting hairs with you here - I actually believe it is as you say, which is just more sick and wrong.

I am sure there are armed guard, military & police officers in Louisiana. Are there any in Texas?

Fort Hood is in Texas, all there needs to be said.

I read jeffers' rant. As someone with experience in disaster planning I have many, many questions about what I have seen out of NO. I will reserve judgment though because much of my information is from the mainstream media which looks for every failure.
