President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Has everyone read the NYT Fishwrap edition? Blaming Bush for everything; including making a "lousy" speech today.

Then, just to pile it on Cesar Chavez is telling his people today that Bush abandonded these people to drown and isnt doing anything because he's incompetent.

I am thinking,,why the promises "NO will be rebuilt",,why the rush to fix the levees?

There needs to be a serious thought about whether to rebuild or not. And if rebuilding, how to do it.

I like the Venice idea. And those lagoons in Venice are filthy so we wouldn't even have to worry about the water, just the mosquitoes.

Where to start??

Here's what I found somewhere and sent to my son and sister:

America faces the worst disaster in its history. More dead than Pearl Harbor. More than 9/11. Maybe only ten times as many dead. Maybe 100 times as many.

Bout sums it up.

"I'm now convinced that this is going to be fully equivalent to 9/11."

Agreed and then some... It's becoming more apparent by the hour that the aftermath left by Katrina may in some ways dwarf that of 9/11.

Yeah. Venice has no flooding problems.

Probably makes more sense now that the old Venice, LA is gone.

Doesn't Benson still own the Saints? He wanted to move them to San Antonio earlier but LA came up with a package he couldn't refuse. Cannot feature if he still owns them the Saints ending up in Los Angeles. I know it is off topic but sports are a great way to relax! :)

"Do you suppose he was really clueless about where to direct people, or just interested in creating a Geraldo like moment."

Do you think ALL those folks around him asking where to go where just as clueless? Do you think the cop or the State Police Lady was clueless? All they had to do was answer the question.

One of the folks said they ahd been told to go one place and when they got there they people in charge in that area told them to go someplace else.

I think you guys are down on Shep because he is asking tough questions and making those in charge look like idiots. I could care if it is for ratings or not. The Point is They should be able to at least make an attempt to do something, in both instances NOTHING HAPPENED!

Shep was right to report it.

Dallas and Houston are also opening up school enrollment to refugees for their kids. I hope Austin area school districts do same, etc. I think Texas, as a compartively "rich" state can absorb most of the refugees. Maybe even convert a few to full blown Texans.

People who had followed the advice to evacuate and driven themselves -- obviously couldn't afford shelter themselves -- are being turned away from the Astrodome because they're not the "right" evacuees. I understand there is a logistical problem with the Astrodome only able to to hold so many, but that was very disturbing, especially as these people had done the smart thing, but now were stranded. Said they were told there were already shelters open that could handle them, but they couldn't find any and no one could give them an answer on where to go.

Yes. Benson owns the Saints. But the NFL wants a team in Los Angeles, not San Antonio. It isn't completely up to him on this one.
