President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.
Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Tropical Storm 12
Like the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. It is beyond taking in except over time.
That's my fear as well. The people who were smart enough to evacuate will probably get much less assistance.

ANy idea where it might be?
The Coast Guard, Army National Guard, Navy and AF Guard helicopter crews are getting lots of coverage. This is probably because the rescues make for good action shots.
Got that right! Seen several today -- anti-Bush crowd was really out on the thread about his speech. This thread has been much more pleasant! :)
San Antonio might get them this season or for majority of it.
Our son is in the ninth grade and we have been talking to him practically all his life about living a life with purpose, and living life on purpose.
We are an Air Force family, and my dh was previously in the Navy. What our son does in the future is up to him and we have no special feelings about him going into military service, but we are emphatic about doing something with meaning.
My son's goal in life right now is to go to the Coast Guard Academy and become a pilot or rescue person. He has only been reading about the Academy and their history and what they do, but had not seen anything firsthand. We have been in awe of them the last few days.
He looked at me last night after watching one rooftop rescue, with shiny eyes and said "I told you I will have a purpose ."
Gone?
Did you notice the Parlamat milk in those bags!
Martial Law declared
First refugees arrive at Astrodome
Military of all branches are assisting
Liberals trying to blame an "act of God" on President Bush
St. Bernard under water
Thugs are hindering rescue operations
I'm glad you took the time to take my advice in post#1191 and look at jeffers' rant. I hope many others do, too.
Nah... all "away" games instead.
Gone.
One thing I read was that the levees on the lake are a joke, mostly built with dirt, with a concrete veneer, not built to any sensible engineering standards. The levees along the river are like a dam, build by the Core of Engineers, and built to modern engineering standards, and are rather safe. They held at least in this storm.
I still find it hard to believe that they will pump all that into LP without trying to filter some of the crap out of it first. Wont that ruin LP?
It's your way of helping us document the truth -- and reminding us how lucky we are.
I don't say it enough, but I appreciate what you do.
I have been paying close attention to the survuval items as well. So far, I have taken note of the following being of use for the people in New Orleans:
Life Jacket, Helmet, Plastic bags for human waste, axe for chopping out of an attic, handgun for looters and rats (oxymoron), bottled water, (hurricane lamps work good for light), and that is about it for now.
