The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Oh come on. These things are scheduled well in advance. Sure, folks would have undertood him breaking his commitment, but was it necessary for him to do so? This is the same "My Pet Goat" nonsense we heard from Michael Moore . . . and frankly, the nation does not need this petty BS right now!

I don't care how far in advance it was scheduled .
Not cancelling was STUPID and Rove is a boob for not advising him so

If they don't know how the MSM plays by now then they are fools

And yes, I will be sending an e-mail to Wolfie telling him how transparent he is.

Personal attacks via freepmail are frowned upon here. I suggest you don't go there.

Fox News is unwatchable. Their round table is talking trash . "Should the North be forced to pay for people living in such a dangerous area? Why do they live there?" Um, maybe they live there because they WORK there getting the oil to warm your house at night and fill your car and power your office and computer.

IDIOTS!!! If DC or NY got hit again they would be the first ones with their hands out saying the rest of the country has to help them rebuild. I would argue that those living in NY and DC are at much greater risk for disaster than NOLA.

Any looting needs to be put down by the NG, shooting the looters if they refuse to stop or try to escape.

Under those circumstances, no looters would be bordering. They would either be arrested or medivac'd out if they survived.

Short answer is...no. Come with the clothes on your back and your life.

They may be considering getting the USS Comfort to move, BUT IMO the sticking point is that with all the Mississippi pass disruption they may not feel willing to risk the ship. Better to send the LHD 5 Baatan which took a few moments to add more helos (from Ingleside) before steaming forth. Think about it- extra space ((for people/patients instead of Marines)), operating rooms, etc etc etc.

The old Navy ships would take weeks to get out of mothballs and make habitable.

Co-opting cruise ships might be an option.

"To: Torie

How deep is Lake Ponchartrain?"

Wiki says 12 to 14', but imagery posted here shows it to be between 1 and 5 feet higher than that right now, probably 2 or 3'.

I know, it drains to the sea but the pics don't lie.

No, not land there, but just fly out of Houston (unanounced) in Marine one and tour the area, back to Houston and then take Air Force One back to DC.

I wonder if he will put his dad and Clinton in charge of this one?

I seem to remember that the deepest holes are around 20 ft. Not a deep lake.

Trent Lott's childhood home is gone, too, per CNN.

Not surprising. I understand the framing, like his spine, was constructed entirely of jelly.
