The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The problem is there's been no increase in disasters and upheaval.

I am way behind in keeping up with the posts, but saw yours on the water coming down the mighty Mississip'. I have been wondering all day if there isn't a way to divert some of that water before it gets to NO.

Are there levees or dams up-river that could be used to divert some of it?

Is anyone besides me a little surprised that things are continuing to get so much worse?

NO - it is not even near the level it is going to get at. Brace yourself

It always takes a day or two for people to get a really accurate picture of destruction. This doesn't surprise me at all. This disaster is especially graphic because the Mississippi River is flooding these areas long after Katrina moved away.

I'm willing to make room in our house for 1 to 4 people. We are in Maryland though.

I don't think the Gov knew about anything in that water, we don't know other than it is dirty.

And what would people do, I mean, there is nothing dry there.

jeffers, where are you reading that Iran has offered anything other than their "sympathy"?

Cause all I can find is this, and it says nothing about money:

He said that Iranian nation and government sympathize with American people especially the bereaved families of the natural disaster.

He hoped that situation in the flood hit states of America would return to normal soon.

Definitely more population affected by Katrina. Andrew missed Miami and hit South Dade-Homestead. Not nearly the numbers of SE Louisiana.

Each cruise ship has several small craft usually used in ferrying vacationing passangers to Island stops. They can do the same here. Also, vessels FEMA is using or other small craft appropriated locally could do the same.

Oklahoma, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico could use that water. No water justice.

Consensus has it being the I-10 bridge from east New Orleans to Slidell.

Semi relevant comment: Bombay, India, went through much the same thing recently, although the water does eventually drain. My wife's sister's family lost their house, all their possessions (no insurance), and were given about $90 by the government to start over. They literally had only the clothes on their backs. We think we have found someone who can help them.
