The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

This isn't a dumb question. I'm fairly sure they've got to be working on blocking the leak - at least I hope so. It can't be as easy as it sounds - if it's not done right, the force of the water will cause more damage to the levee and may enlarge it.

No, I am sure there are plenty of cruise ships sitting around empty near New Orleans.

So I go and turn on CNN per your recommendation and they spend the next ten minutes talking about how the National Guard is in Iraq when they should be here to deal with Katrina.

Blood pressure rising, back to Fox.

Aren't there cruises that go to and from NO, also. Wonder what's happening with that...

WWL is showing footage of water draing FROM algiers, into a channel??

Looks like a Barge has smashed through the flood wall, and is sitting on a couple of houses. It's across from a Refinery?

I didn't realize they sailed out of New Orleans. Maybe I should get out more...

...all we need now is an earthquake

Well at least an open chasm in the earth would give a place for all the water to go.

What kind of draft do cruise ships have? Is it too deep for the river? I've been reading here that some barges can't navigate the river any longer due to the silt.

Just heard on WLS radio out of Chicago, that there are as many as 60,000 people in the Superdome now, and that people are still being sent there.

What a terrible mess these poor people must be in that they would go THERE.

It's unclear that any ship could get up to New Orleans; there's been massive channel shifting and siltation.

We are reaping what we sowed, but only in a natural way. They gambled on the ri flood control system and lost. They need to go back to the drawing bvoard and see what can be done differently. There has been ahuige effort in the past. More to be done in the future.

No idea. I am as much in the dark as you
as far as evacuation goes.

I do believe the gov & mayor are just
totally clueless and have no plan
whatsoever. Main problem right there,
the gov and mayor. They act like they
are going to just let this disaster
play itself out.

I live right on the Houston Ship channel (Galveston Bay) I will report if shipping increases as I think it must. All those ships will have to go someplace. Ship waves are cool, I'll have to break out my little rubber raft and ride a few.

Cruise ships go regularly into NO -- down the main MS channel. That is a very popular Western Carribbean stop.
