The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

What is latest word on being able to repair the levee breaks?

From CNN via WWL-TV, there was to be another attempt to plug it. That was posted about 1 1/2 hours ago.

can you comprehend that there is ONE bridge into New Orleans that is working?
can you comprehend that access to the Gulf Coast is littered with hundreds of pine trees on hwy 49?
That is a HUGE rual area where road access is literally not possible right now.
Help is moving as fast as possible, don't use the perspective of politicians..FEMA/Guard on TV? then they can't do their job.

I have relatives in Hattiesburg. Does anyone know if they have electricity there?

Not as of nightfall last night, according to one of the cable channels (I'm in California)

I think something like 80 percent of MS is without power - statewide!

Agreed. Best temporary solution I've heard - I only hope they can expedite this process, before things breakdown even more.

You discredit yourself by telling another poster that they are hysterical. Stick to the facts, Nurse.

Point out one item in my post that is not fact. You are barking up the wrong tree in this discussion.

V's got a valid point, though: they should put some folks in front of the cameras saying exactly what is being done -- giving war-room briefings a bit more frequently than they have been.

Cruise ships was the suggestion. To actually house the people temporarily.

They are staging out of Maxwell AFB. Blanco declared today a Day of Prayer but she should have been asking all the states to send in guard troops. They have to have someplace to send the troops and with the levee breaks, it is not safe to get the guard into N.O. There are utility workers waiting to go in but with rising water there is nothing they can do.

Navy is sending in ships. Guard is helping in Mississippi which we are not seeing on TV but then their Governor is on top of everything and asked the President not to come to the area before Friday.

The President released the petroleum reserves this morning and is working to get everything in place. Would you rather have him grandstanding then working? This is not about PR but about getting the job done.

Because of lack of TV coverage for other than LA, we are not being told what the Guard is doing right now.

That means their PAOs aren't set up yet. They will eventually get it together.

I am not that opposed to getting them in the AstroDome. A stadium is not a terrible place to house people temporarily, if it is fully functioning.

i think the key here is to just get the folks out of NO. I'm assuming that a vast number of them have friends or relatives in other, safer locales whom they can shack up with for a while, so won't all have to be taken to the Astrodome.

It has to be made clear to them that they will not be going back to their homes for weeks, if at all, so they need to start making plans to stay somewhere for that period of time and not in the Astrodome.

Then find out where they want to go and give them bus or train fare to get there. If that were done in earnest (and I expect it will be), then there should not be that large a number of people who have to be accomodated at the Astrodome or anywhere else.

Like it or not, the impression from what we're all seeing on TV is that the feds aren't doing anything except pulling people from roofs by helicopter ;-{

Forget about getting news from the MSM. Like everything they are not letting the public know what really is going on. A little story here another story there.
