The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

An "expert" on the levees of New Orleans on CNN felt that it would be necessary to blow some of the levees that protect the city from hurricanes in order to drain out the water because there are no pumps large enough to do the whole job. From the pictures, the Lake is still draining rapidly into the city.

Damming the levee at this point will not drain water from the city.

Someone else mentioned a while back about "knocking down some levys to let the water out." Is that right? If the water is the same level as Lake Ponchatrain I'm not sure where the water would go. Aaron Brown, on CNN, mentioned last night something about "what they'll find when the water recedes." My understanding is that the ONLY way water leaves the bowl is to be pumped out.

Bush is losing the PR war on aiding in recovery big time!

I don't pretend to have seen every news report, but those I've seen are concentrating on the negatives... the things not getting done.... the troops not arriving anywhere.... the politicians saying they aren't getting help.

I know that there is massive help headed to the affected areas, but someone needs to get VIDEOS of that actually happening on TV.

I saw one brief segment this morning on CNN of some Guard trucks on the move. But that is ALL I have seen for days.

FEMA, Army, etc. spokes-people need to be getting on the air more often to tell us what they're doing!

You're sweet Tomcat. Her husband's family is from and in Biloxi. His mother is in her 80's, quite ill, and they need basic necessities - water, food, and electricity. There's no way I could talk her out of going. We gave her our generator, a couple of cell phones (Southern Linc is the only service we know of that still works in Biloxi), chain saws and other requested items as she's adamant about going. I will of course, pass along all warnings and suggestions I gather from my fellow freepers.

Hello,

We vacationed at the Grand Casino less than 2 weeks ago, we returned to St. Louis on the 19th. It was beautiful. Looking at that simply makes me want to cry.

I just love the armchair levee break repairers and helicopter pilots here. I'm sure if they were there they'd have it plugged already. That is if hot air can plug it.

That followed her press conference where I wanted to throw something at the TV at her and Landrieu for not having a clue.

He should address the nation in the morning before he leaves Crawford for D.C.

The President has been in D.C. for two days, he cut his vacation short. What could he possibly say that wouldn't be twisted by the MSM? HE is not in charge yet, the states have to ask for help.

What you're really trying not to say is that the looters are black. That's true. Then again, most of the non-looters in NO are black, too.

Where you're missing the boat is that they're not looters because they're black.

no electricity, no water, no working gas stations in the Forrest Co/Lamar area. Looters hit Hattiesburg businesses last night. I can advise them if they visit my in-laws neighborhood they'll get buckshot through their chest. Check Hattiesburg American Newspaper website for more info.

Haven't heard -- very little coverage of Mississippi except for the casinos that have been destroyed.

take a moment to think through the hysteria

You discredit yourself by telling another poster that they are hysterical. Stick to the facts, Nurse.

The only thing I'm feeling is pure dread for all these people in these areas.

I was all ready to get upset by your post, but then I realized you're right. They do need to get some faces in front of the camera saying what is being done. The fallout from that would, of course, be to push the LA politicians aside -- but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

That's why I put "expert" in quotes. He was a CNN "expert" on top of that.

Every democrat who appears on TV makes sure to say what a "phenomenal" job she is doing. They must have all agreed that she needs propping up.

Well, they can say it til next year, but I know what I am seeing.

A guy trapped in a hotel called into Larry King and asked what would be done to help them. Her answer: "I don't know."

Honest, that was her answer. I still can't get over it.

Opening levees at sea level will drain the city down to that point. I believe the lake is currently 3 feet above sea level, if the city is nearing the level of the lake you can gain a few feet, then pump out the rest.

I don't think the Astrodome is such a bad idea, personally. It's fully enclosed and air conditioned. I think it's about 5 hours from Houston to NOLA.
