The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Time to be a man and just admit you were factually wrong.

Excuse me? Wrong about exactly what? You mean that the evacuation was given Saturday, and not Friday? Sorry - A STATE OF EMERGENCY was given Friday. And copius interviews by the mayor and governor as to the seriousness of the storm, anf the fact that people should pack it up.

Now why don't you be a man and tell us what your interest is in this conversation? Do you feel there was not enough warning given for people to leave? What is it, Stifler?

Wait a minute, now I'm really confused -- apparently the hurricane is actually Haley Barbour's fault. See, Barbour didn't have a plan for dealing with the hurricanes he should have known he'd be creating by opposing the Kyoto Protocol.

So I guess we can say that the carnage in Mississippi can be directly traced to a lack of planning and preparation on the part of its governor.

Sounds fair to me! ;)

That's the last time I try to break up a fight :-)

Sorry. :) Good post. The "Diddle E Squat" thing just threw me off. Sounded like just more of the same. Not that your criticism, as explained above, doesn't have merit.

Credible people on FR do not ever quote 1) Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and 2) Arianna Huffington.

Hello Howlin, Have you started a donation thread? My vote is for http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/

Perhaps someone already has.

It seems the best thing we can do at this time is start sending money where it is needed now.

Does anyone here know the safe/dry route out of N.O. My friend is near hwy.90 and belle chase... i was hoping that hwy.90 west to Houma is workable...

Sorry, I'm not in Houma anymore (Tx).....I did read that evacuee's could RETURN to Terrebonne Parish (Houma) using 90.......but have seen no info re: condition of 90 south to NO.

Maybe someone could check with Sheriff's in Houma ??? Since NO cops unreachable.

Is it your view that the plans for this storm, and its implementation, were adequate? Does it bother you at all, that those without cars, were not offered a way out of Dodge with public transportation prior to the door closing? Is that compassionate? Is it competent that large refugee camps were not put in motion as soon as it appeared that a cat 5 storm was headed to NO? Of course if it remained a Cat 5 and had not moved east, one would not have needed them except as a cemetary. Is it competent that after the storm passed, there were not plans put immediately in place to evacuate those left in NO? Maybe I am just too demanding. Maybe I should have been governor of Louisiana. If I had, things would have evolved differently. I would have had Bush on speed dial. Just read my posts over the past four days.

***I hope you work for FEMA, because you obviously have the plan all worked out.***

When I was a CD volunteer,(20 years agao) they had plans to evacuate Indianapolis residents within 24 hours, using everything they could find, from rail-cars to buses, in the event of a Massive Tornado or Nuclear strike.

And they recently updated those for New Madrid a couple of years ago....

IMO, They screwed the pooch, BIG-TIME, in order not to scare the tourists, and remember, they had just gone through a RECENT(Last Year??) evacuation for one that missed them...

11:31 A.M. CDT

THE PRESIDENT: This morning I spoke with FEMA Undersecretary Mike Brown and emergency management teams not only at the federal level but at the state level about the -- Hurricane Katrina. I've also spoken to Governor Blanco of Louisiana, Governor Barbour of Mississippi, Governor Bush of Florida, and Governor Riley of Alabama. I want to thank all the folks at the federal level and the state level and the local level who have taken this storm seriously. I appreciate the efforts of the governors to prepare their citizenry for this upcoming storm.

Yesterday, I signed a disaster declaration for the state of Louisiana, and this morning I signed a disaster declaration for the state of Mississippi. These declarations will allow federal agencies to coordinate all disaster relief efforts with state and local officials. We will do everything in our power to help the people in the communities affected by this storm.

Hurricane Katrina is now designated a category five hurricane. We cannot stress enough the danger this hurricane poses to Gulf Coast communities. I urge all citizens to put their own safety and the safety of their families first by moving to safe ground. Please listen carefully to instructions provided by state and local officials.
