The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

however, plasma TVs, jewelry, stereos, and multiple pairs of jeans are NOT goods needed for survival.

Agreed on the jewelry, stereos and jeans, but with football season arriving soon, if I'm going to be stuck in my flooded house for a month, the plasma tv IS a necessity.

Sorry, just trying to bring a bit of levity to a terrible event.

I am surprised that the Mayor didn't apologize to the Gays because their Labor Day weekend that they hold every year in the French Quarter has been cancelled.

Mayor wants the Feds to help with coastal erosion.

How would that have changed anything?

That would be a new role for FEMA but makes sense. Could be very expensive for false alarms. Where would this semi permanent tent city be? Why don't we just build a nice spare city somewhere?

Some of the looters were POLICE Officers (just showed the video on MSNBC).

I hate bad cops. Uh, what were they grabbing?

Now the governor is speaking about the situation in the Dome. 20,000 she says. A mix of good folks and bad actors. Water still rising around the Dome.

My qoestion: Where is the National Guard / Army troops. This silly woman lacks gravitas.

FEMA, the military and all their contractors have a plan .. what's stopping everything is the water .. stopping the leak in the dike. They can't bring in food, water, provide tent cities .. nothing .. until they can fix the leak and stop the mounting feet of water everywhere.

I would imagine there are dozens, if not hundreds of flat bottom boats and airboats, their crews being heroes to the helpless.. rescuing them. That's all that I believe can be done until the water issue is resolved.

I must admits I am jealous. The rest of the states must have some pair of magic shoes like in the wizard of oz or something. God It hits on Sun night its Tuesday and Mr Brown doesnt know why not every man and woman enlisted in the guard is not there there right now. Talk about alt reality.

It was discussed a lot on here Saturday night that the Mayor was meeting with lawyers before making the decision mandatory. Why the wait is what I would like to know?

The mayor didn't wait to evacuate his own family. They were gone by Saturday.

A magic 8 ball doesn't ask questions, it provides answers. Very good answers. :-)

Mass Evacuation is not just a police action.

I did not know that they had one (not surprised, though.) They must have a lot of vacations- they head to Disney the first week of October.

I am listening to the Governor and I am appalled. They put those people in the Dome and clearly had no plan to do something else with them. She is talking about not knowing where to go with them and needing to find a way to get them out.

She's talking about the deteriorating sanitary situation as if though it is a surprise. She talking about busses taking the people out when they had hundeds of school busses before the event...which are all now under water.

I'm just dumbfounded. She sounds like she is making it up as she goes and she is just as bewildered as the refugees in the Dome.

The President needs to federalize this now IMHO.

what's going to happen ti improve the situation during this week they these people are left in the superdome?

I assume the person that told them to go there in the first place had a plan to move them in the PREDICTED/LIKELY situation downtown NO would flood....

Well, cajungirl, leave it to you to spell it out in plain language. YOU should be the mayor of NO!

> You are right. I have heard for years how NO would one day float in the sea from a big cane. Mostly people joking about it. But I can't believe there really was no plan down there-- pumps that can only handly 2 inches of rain? On the coast? No back ups?

You should read "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds," by Charles MacKay (1841). There is a groupthink that allows bad decisions to be made by large groups of people, only because every one else is doing it or not worrying about it. In retrospect, would you build a house in a coastal city that was below sea level and surrounded by a huge lake and the continent's largest river?
