The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Steel bolts have a finite tensile limit, so every other span popped loose to relieve the pressure.
There was an identical failure on the I-10 (coincidence? no) bridge across P-cola Bay last year with Ivan.
To actually see it's wrath is another matter entirely.

That's right....forgot about the timing of that... I've got CNN on...have been a bit distracted, but I don't think they showed a presser here....(but as I said, I've been distracted...had a couple of phone calls).

I think FreeRepublic might centralize this information. There are volunteer programs popping up all over the country. The best thing to do is to contact FEMA or a local radio or newspaper of which city you may want to help. There is always the Red Cross and Salvation Army.
I hope you weren't directing that comment at me, because I was telling another freeper that this had nothing to do with the fact that the mayor is Black. Nada.

We just got power on in the last hour. We were genuinely not expecting it. This morning, they didn't expect to get us back up for 1-2 weeks. The thing is, the crews can't get into New Orleans, so I guess they got us back up because of that.
Lots of damage here in Ascension Parish. We are 50 miles west of New Orleans. 50 homes got hit by trees. Downtown Gonzales had a lot of trees power poles, light poles, down in the roads. A Shell station down the street had one of those big metal canopies over the pump topple down. A gas station about a mile further down must have been hit by a mini tornado. Steel beams from it are wrapped around trees.
Our property, which is about 6 acres is literally carpeted in leaves, trees and branches. But we're safe, and tonight we have power.
Well that deals with surge failure, not later failure, which is what happened to the main bowl, and fails to deal with the elevation of Lake Ponchatrian, and just why the water is 3-4 feet above sea level and supposedly according to a CNN reporter supposed to rise another 5 feet. I find it totally and utterly baffling.

I have no idea but she needs to go. Not showing up at the press conference for the LA media but going on national TV is just flat out wrong. What is she afraid of -- LA media asking tougher questions than Larry King?
The only passable road I've heard of is I-10 west of NO.

Seriously, the Blizzard of '78 shut down the city for 6 days. We had, what I thought at the time, was martial law. People died, houses washed out to sea, electricity and heat were out. There was no looting, everybody worked together and shared their limited resources. And we had zero warning. These people in New Orleans had days. The mayor himself sent his family out of NO before Saturday.
I am angry at the looters. I am especially angry at the people who endangered their children by not leaving. They are using up resources that should be used for truly needy victims of this tragedy.
Maybe its designed to fail? Rather than take the whole thing down to the bottom.
