Katrina Live Thread, Part XI

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"If you look at the pictures that was posted on another thread (pulled for some reason) you see that two major levies --one was 17th street -- the first one to go; and the other Filmore Street iver the London Ave, Canal --were under construction and depending on sand bags to hold bag any potential hurricane surges for the near future...

In addition near the Louis Armstrong Airport there was ten miles of incomplete levees from the Bonnet Carre Spillway -- five miles from Lake Ponchartrain; a 5-10 foot wall of sandbags along the Airline Drive to the Mississippi Rver levee near the airport; another 60 miles o flevees that needed to be raised and were years away from completion; computer models said that the low levee from Monticello Ave in Jefferson Parish near the city's water plant was a likely spot for a major flood to enter the city.

With this information in hand the fact they didn't call a mandatory evacuation -- or face arrest -- is terrible."

--If these matters can be attributed to federal cutbacks under Bush, he's in trouble.

Until they start filing Civil Rights Lawsuits when the courthouses reopen....

Maybe. But I don't think such suits will gain much traction in courts manned by judges and juries who just went through the horror of Katrina. However, as someone mentioned earlier, those stealing food and water might not be prosecuted at all....the criminals are those nabbing electronics and jewelry and other unnecessary stuff. Those creeps deserve juries made up of nothing but shopkeepers.

As for the footage I was speaking about-I didn't say how much pigment the looters in that footage had - white guys don't get to yell about civil rights.... ;]

Wouldn't it be possible to bring big boats down the Mississippi to pick up some of these people? Sorry I don't live near NO, so hope this isn't a dumb question.

We could not believe how early the airlines canceled flights.

They probably wanted to cancel operations so their ground staff could safely evacuate. Evil bastards.

Sad to say that your stinging insight won't address the problem that these days, the engineers that win the low bid to DESIGN INFRASTRUCTURE LIKE THIS can barely speak english.

I am coming back in from the dark for the most part, but I just wanted to let you all know that Slidell, which is to the East of New Orleans has downtown under 15 feet of water. We have friends out there, who know their business, home, schools are all gone.

We were at the shelter with somebody from down south whose farm is assumed to be a total loss with alot of cattle, and horses wiped out, their neighborhood just gone.

I think we need to keep things in perspective.

But you DON'T KNOW ANYTHING about the perspective.

You said, Mary Landrieu has to tell the governor what to say. That governor really does totally ineffectual. Landrieu won't be able to cover for her...or the New Orlenans mayor either. He's an idiot! I read this earlier on a Drudge link: "Sen. Mary Landrieu quietly traced the sign of the cross across her head and chest as she looked out at St. Bernard Parish, where only roofs peaked out from the water. "The whole parish is gone," Landrieu said."

Sweet Mary has already snidely suggested the president hasn't done all he could have done. It won't be long before she and the democrats go into full attack mode. I'm sure they're already looking on this disaster as a great opportunity for more voter fraud. After all, that's how she got into the senate. If we thought Republicans were cowards then, for not taking that Louisiana election to the courts, we ain't seen nothing yet.
