The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

What makes everyone think that Bush has not flown over. Hell he had Thanksgiving in Bagdad

I bet he did fly over. The MAN is no whimp & takes his job seriously. In short, he is a leader.

Read somewhere that his aides & people were in the area at the outset.

Why are they still sending people to the Dome? It is a mass epidemic waiting to happen...malaria, typhoid, west nile fever.

Hopefully they have a plan to rescue all of them and are using the dome as a central location.

Anyone noticing the predominant ethnicity of those doing the looting. (ducking my head) I am watching CNN and they are taking anything and everything.

If I were you, I would be asking the mod to take that down.

I do not have TV, but, I will guess that you are seeing Americans with darker skin engaging in criminal acts. This is a surprise to you?

Let's transpose this whole scene to South Boston; and tell me that the white Irish in that neighborhood would act any differently. There are respectable blacks in NO and respectable whites in Southie. But, the veneer of civilization is very thin, regardless of race or geography.

The magnitude is amazing and until they can get that water out of there it is only going to get worse as the sewer services continue to be gone, fresh water is not available, lack of electricity, and sadly, as dead animals (and unfortunately people) decompose and as more rot and spoilage continue to infect that water.

I pray they can get the people out of that mess...before the diseases set in.

They rescued 3000 today...but they need to get them out of the "bowl" and to dry, safe areas with electricty, good water, etc.

>>>Haley Barbour said to Larry King that Bush was itching to come down and had asked to come to Mississippi, but Barbour said not yet. Landrieu said he is coming on Friday.<<<

I hope Cindy Sheehan and her entourage try to follow him into NO. We may finally get rid of her.

and where are we going to send these thousands and thousands of people? If people were reluctant on going a few blocks from their homes to the superdome GOOD LUCK in trying to get them to go to baton Rouge and lafayette and lake charles!

Katrina in no way compares to the tsunami. It just seems like a slap in the face of the millions of people who lost loved ones in the tsunami to say that Katrina is our tsunami. I think we need to keep things in perspective.

You need to pay attention to what has happened here. You really don't know what you are talking about - trust me.

oddly, the video of the black looters is juxtaposed with the video of black folks being rescued from homes they worked for and tried to save.
One can assume that most folks white or black, are decent people, but for some folks, white or black, opportunistic anarchy is a part of the "ghetto mentality".

in LA looters came in all colors, but local demographics/economic status is probably key.

gotta be frustrating for hard working blacks to turn on the tv and always see the black guy as a looter, or prisoner...but the camera only captures what it sees...

I wonder what Jesse and AL have said to stop the looting?
Oh, sorry, that was silly...

Hey, listen, calling for a day of prayer IS the first thing that should be done. I'm proud of the fact that she said this.

For those who can't be there in person to help, much prayer is needed from them. She was wise to call for it.

As for the rest, she may not be up to the challenge, but I do believe she is giving it her all to the very best of her abilities.

The people of LA elected her governor -- she's in the position -- and doing all she can with her personal capabilities. She may not be up to the task, but she IS trying her best.

I recall reading somewhere that the second levee to go was the industrial canal. It is one that connects the Mississippi to the lake.

Here is a pic of the second breach:

http://us.news3.yimg.com/us.i2.yimg.com/p/ap/20050830/capt.ladp11108301631.hurricane_katrina_ladp111.jpg

Here is the pic of the levees:

http://www.nola.com/hurricane/popup/nolalevees_jpg.html

If the second breach is indeed at the industrial canal, then NOLA is lost unless they can stop it. Otherwise, the Mississippi is going to flow right in.

The question is, where exactly is this second breach? The water looks like it is flowing from the top right of the picture towards the middle. Is the middle the canal? The top right looks like a flooded neighbourhood of some sort.

Per CNN: Another levee about to fail. Did not say where.

Well, if it's a lake levy it won't matter because they surrendered the city to the lake. I hadn't heard them mention that anything along the river was threatened yet. They wouldn't say where, huh?
