The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

That can't be so. The river is low this time of year.

Lot's of rain from Katrina is draining to the ocean via the Miss. R.

Okay, I have finally HAD it and am going to have a mini nervous breakdown. We are the United States of America, for gawd's sake and we are going to let a city of folks drown tonight?

We have had twelve hours of daylight and all I have seen is a puny attempt by conservation agents and the coast guard to rescue.

Why, oh why, weren't military flying in helicopters and transport planes to shuttle folks out. Why weren't private planes commandeered? Why weren't transport boats flown in as far as possible?

We are looking at the most pitiful excuse for a great nation to save its own that I have ever witnessed.

Does anyone know if a lot of small boats can be brought from up and down the Gulf coast for rescues???

All I know is that I am underwhelmed by the federal response.

According to WWL which I have minimized the authorities cannot see the beginning or end of the Mississippi River as it is all one and the levee has been breeched with holes in the levee.

they had several reports of cops looting earlier today, some loading up carts of merchandise and taking it to their cars in full view of reporters...
they were quite popular with the looters...

but MSM is trying to be very selective in reporting

Gov. Blanco sounds like a pathetic whiner.... granted, the situation is horrible, but there are leaders capable of rising to such occasions.... and apparently she is not one of them.

So there IS a river breach, but down stream from NO.

That's correct. No direct implication for New Orleans just yet. Plaqueminnes is where the mouth of the river comes out. They got the direct hit down there.

That is worth repeating....louder

President Bush has spoken.

He is in DC and soon to be in the disaster area.

The military IS already helping and on the way.

Hope that helps.

Though the looting does lend to an overall chaotic sense of lawlessness. If they're free to loot, they're free to do anything they want.

actually, if we hadn't disqualified Bernard Kerik for not paying nanny taxes, and sleeping with judith regan, we'd have him in there instead of Chertoff. somebody who is tough, street and urban saavy.

OK but the Mayor's Office said NO will be under nine feet of water in the next 12-15 hours -- where is that water coming from?

Tonight was the first time I was able to see video today.

The 12+ minute video of the 17 mile aerial tour by helicopter of the Miss. coast shown on MSNBC was absolutely jaw dopping.

No way. The hurricane is barely over let alone the drainage from up river. Couldn't be. I saw that river two nites ago flying in and it was low! Very low. It would take weeks to get the level up.
