wonderful news.
WWL reported from the Mayor's office that NO needed to be evacuated as there will be nine feet of water throughout the city -- didnt give specifics. At first the reporter said 12-15 feet of water and the Mayor's Office called to say nine feet in 12-15 hours.
French Quarter is now taking on water according to reports as well.
Have a local TV station on that is broadcasting out of LSU.
The seal shot the looter. The cop shot the seal.
carjackings taking place...they need soldiers in there..just like a freaking war zone.
The Navy is sending swift boats, but don't know how fast they will get there.
Unbelievable. Those who are still in the city are about to be stranded by even more water... tens of thousands. And all of them in the dark and at the mercy of roving bands of thugs. Jesus.
Like I said previously. It's out of control and everybody is joining in. The dumb ones will take the TV'S and anything electric. Smart ones will grab the food and beverages.
I can't believe how bad this is....total destruction.
The French Quarter is one of the places that is a couple of feet above sea level. Hope this stabilizes, although I wonder where the water can go?
Escape from NY time.
I'm so glad you said that...I've had that sense all day.
It's chilling.
"CNN had a reporter on that is reporting three looters have been shot near the Super Dome."
Put a sign on there backs that says "looter" and let em float.
tally i have:
sea lion shot
cop shot
multiple looters shot
mayhem breaking out
Superdome control "deterioriating" rapidly
tv crews being robbed on the street
and the sun is about to set....
stay safe!
Frankly, the looting is the least of New Orlean's problems. Looting is so trivial to the real devastation that is going on. I really don't understand why looting is such a big issue to so many Freepers. Those people are really too obsessed with the looting when their attention should be focused on what needs to be done to help these people. Looting is chump change in the big picture.
"To: DocRock
This is dreadful. Does anyone have an any idea if water on both sides of the river at the levys could compromise them? That's the only thing that could be worse at this point.
"
Water on both sides of the levee is both a blessing and a curse. If it is flowing, it will scour at the levee. If it is still, it will weaken an earthen levee by reducing the cohesiveness of the fill, but the weight will counteract that of the high water on the other side.
I just saw a sad shot of people trudging along a highway, with their stuff bundled up in sheets slung over their shoulders. They have miles to walk to get anywhere safe, and there are no services, not even any water along the way. But I bet they feel they are safer out on the highway than in NO tonight.
Heartbreaking.
Thanks for the heads-up on the Kroger food drive. Count me in!
(A N. Texas ping list was mentioned by another freeper..if so, add me, please!)
