RICHMOND, Va. — University of Virginia officials are considering making hate speech a violation of the campus honor code after racist messages were scrawled on doors and shouted from passing cars.

If these incidents weren't fabrications, like the professor at another University that scrawled racist graffiti on her own car just to scream "I'm a victim," then the perps were probably not students. I fear this is just being used as an excuse to criminalize any thoughts the PC crowd disagrees with.

At UVA an honor code violation only has one penalty (automatic expulsion) and your fate is decided by other students with no adult supervision. I fear that the new "Hate Speach" honor code would be applied to Conservatives and Christians who might offer any criticisim of the homosexual lifestyle. And those evil college GOP groups could be tossed out of school for conducting those insensitive affirmative action bake sales.

Although, I'm sure the radical leftist campus groups could continue to immitate Michael Moore without fear of reprisal.

Sorry FRiend, but I don't think you need to go any further than that.  These crimes are fake so often that I automatically conclude they are until absolutely proven otherwise.  Without going back and looking, I don't recall being wrong in the last three years or so.

(If what I just wrote makes you sad or angry,

 it was probably sarcasm)

University of Virginia officials are considering making hate speech a violation of the campus honor code ...

Does this mean you won't be able to buy rap music in the Student Store?

Coming soon, UVA student on a soap-box, wearing a Che shirt:

"You stupid, hypocritical Christians! You should all be banned from this University! We don't want your kind here!! I cannot believe that you invite people to attend sermons where the Bible will be quoted! I demand that the University shut you down!"

And the Univesity will consider it, and probably do it. But no one will suggest that the student with the Che shirt may have violated the honor code...

this is fraud - very popular at college campuses first week of school... happens every fall at my campus for the past 11 years - next day president address - following day concessions and extra fund $ made available for "certain" clubs, 1 week later completely forgotten

You mean the "music" that advocates killing women, police officers and routinely uses racial slurs? I'm sure that will be exempted as freedom of artistic expression.

What would be funny is for some brave student to stand on the rotunda steps and simply read the lyrics of some obscure rap song. And then when hauled up on charges, he could just bring in the CD and explain that he was just, "keeping it real."

Hate speech is hate speech, but an HONOR VIOLATION???

If I say "DEMS SUCK", that's not dishonest, although Dems may not like for me to say it.

Indeed, what makes me very concerned is the prospect that these racial epithets were graffitied by the very people crying foul. A few years back, a girl running for UVA Student Council President named Daisy Lundy claimed she had been assaulted in a parking lot by someone demanding she drop out of the race. This resulted in her opponent dropping out and she becoming the new studco pres. There remains little doubt that the incident never occured and that the minor scratches for which she received treatment were self-inflicted. And she demonstrated grounds for suspicion when, after winning the election, accused a number of conservative/libertarian organizations of being racist. She was even known on at least one occasion to attend meetings of these organizations with the purpose of harassing them.

What makes alll of this most worrisome is the fact that John Casteen (president of UVA) is a known PC/diversity hawk. UVA has never met a liberal policy/program they didn't like since he was brought aboard.

Yeah, I remember. T.J. wrote "Freedom of speech will not be abridged, except for 'hate speech.'"

My husband attended UVA back in the 80's, too, but he
never mentioned that racial slurs were ever tossed at him. There was some tension at UVA at the time, but probably not any more so than anywhere else, and not to the extent in this article, as far as I was told, anyway.

I should have put rap "music" in quotes. Of course my opinion on the subject isn't worth much. I remember confidently predicting that rap "music" wouldn't last 6 months.

There was the whole shanty on the Lawn thing--a la Dartmouth. I knew one of the guys who tore it down and he was an incredible racist. We tried to pledge a black girl to my sorority and he went bananas about it. (Not that it made a difference!) Yuck.

But I don't remember anything overtly racist like this.

I know there is talk this is fake, but knowing that guy makes me think anything is possible.

There is a conservative bent in a lot of the students which I loved, but some good old boys could take it too far.

I remember thinking it was a flash in the crack pan as well. Unfortunately the rappers today make Run DMC look like Tony Bennett.

Another “high tech grade school” masquerading as a University trying to impose its will on others.

Social engineering (heavily practiced in most socialist systems) is more important than the product it produces or the competition it faces. Whether they know it or not, American Universities are on the verge of a Darwin Kodak moment.

I wouldn't be surprised if this sort of thing came from Hillary's favorite book, Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals".
Remember, the Left thinks the truth is only an obstacle to be overcome to achieve "social justice".
